Dh earns a decent wage but with four kids and one at uni plus a high mortgage we have very little buffer. His job will probably go if the economy slows. I can't work because of caring duties. We probably have a full months worth of expenses in savings.

It's not just staying in for two weeks. It's if he loses his job. I just can't see us surviving months of this.

Yes. I’m a small specialist retailer, and have literally been looking at mortgage breaks and trying to get rid of the car which we pay monthly. I get nothing at all if the business isn’t making money, DH is local authority and will be fine BUT we cannot survive with one wage.
I’m actually having cold sweats about having to declare bankrupt. I’m waiting to hear if I will be entitled to this government grant.
The fact that there is so many people in this position though, it’s scary, but I also hope the government realise how fragile peoples working lives are and the banks are forced into helping their customers in an Italy style way. No mortgage or utilities to pay.

Rosebel · 16/03/2020 21:59

We might be okay. My husband gets full pay for up to six months and he may well have to take 12 weeks off. I might have to take 12 weeks as well but only get SSP and then will be on maternity leave.
I actually feel slightly sick every time I think about it.

Zaphodsotherhead · 16/03/2020 22:02

I work in a shop, which has been busier than Christmas, so we are okay for now, but I'm hourly paid, so if they close the shop or put us on short opening I won't be able to pay my bills. Added to being on the front line for infection, and I can't survive for long on SSP, so I am hoping we stay open normal hours.

Before you ask, no, we don't have any toilet rolls...

GetRid · 16/03/2020 22:06

The government is going to have to step in and force banks and utilities to allow payment breaks

President Macron has said no business in France will fail

The UK govt will be forced to take drastic measures

Things are moving rapidly so don't despair people!!

DeRigueurMortis · 16/03/2020 22:10

@WitchQueenofDarkness That's a great response wrt your cleaner.

I hope we will see many more people help share the burden.

Was speaking to DH and even as landlords ourselves we'd like to see the govt stop people being evicted if they lose their jobs as part of this crisis.

It seems awful that renters (many of whom can't get on the property ladder due to low incomes and likely to be worse impacted) may be expected to carry on with "normal" financial obligations, whilst landlords (who are more likely to have financial reserves) can still expect to maintain rents at "normal" rates or start eviction notification.

The burden of this crisis has to be shared in proportional way without those most vulnerable to income loss being left in dire straits.

I'm with Breton.. Life will do

HateIsNotGood · 16/03/2020 22:12

Plombear - I think your approach is one of the best - take the hits and be flexible. Hopefully more will take a similar approach too.

Tbh, all the current recommendations are the 'way of life' that I and DS have lived for over a decade - social 'distancing' and 'isolation' are both rather par for the course for many - in our case Autism and educational and social exclusion.

It's not that bad really, quite survivable. you get used to it.

Divingindeep · 16/03/2020 22:18

After I emailed my landlord today saying I was so worried about being able to feed my kids, I don’t know what the heck I’ll be doing about rent, he has emailed me back saying to forget the rent for the next few months and will reassess then.
He said just concentrate on feeding my family and not to worry. Bloody crying writing this. How amazing is he.

lljkk · 16/03/2020 22:19

5% loss of global GDP? :(

I'm betting my pension will take 12 years to recover.

Jonesn1 · 16/03/2020 22:22

@Divingindeep He sounds amazing Sad, I know there won't be much I can do for my tenants

TowandaForever · 16/03/2020 22:23

@RainMinusBow

There’s an article on the hated daily mail saying that cv does not pass through the womb to babies.

Charlottejade89 · 16/03/2020 22:23

I'm worried, I know my job is safe because I'm a healthcare assistant in the nhs, but I'm on a zero hour contract, and my dp is a self employed delivery driver so neither of us will get any sick pay. if we have to self isolate even for 14 days will majorly put us in the shit. We already have debts due to having lower wages in the past and no savings. 4 children between us, 1 living with us and our house is rented. I hope our landlord will let us owe the rent as he has lots of properties and is a rumoured millionaire

DreamChaser23 · 16/03/2020 22:23

Yeah for sure. In my industry, demand is going down week after week. I have a job this week but next week I feel I might be forced to go/unpaid for a long time. I am a temp worker so I am not really protected. I worry for millions of us. This is gonna affect so many

justasking111 · 16/03/2020 22:24

If you are with Barclays read link below. I think the government will step in to make sure banks building societies give us all a break if we are badly affected by the virus. Ditto councils and landlords.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 16/03/2020 22:32

I work for a cruise line so the whole thing has just fallen apart. In the short term my job is relatively safe as we're a business with no debt to service but realistically it can only go on for so long.
We were house hunting but have put that on hold for now in case our savings need to become living expenses for a while. The travel industry is decimated lots of job losses already and its going to get worse.

BlossomCat · 16/03/2020 22:37

I did my last shift tonight for a very long time, I think, working in a theatre that closed 45 minutes before curtain up.
It was the most surreal experience saying goodbye to my colleagues, some of whom are older people.
As I'm on a zero hours contract, I have no idea where I will get money from.
Thankfully, we are mortgage and rent free, but theres still bills to pay. My husband works in healthcare, so will carry on, but due to universities closing, there's now 5 of us under one roof, with only one wage coming in.
I planted some radishes in the garden the other day, thinking that I may well be blooming grateful for them in a few weeks!

Jellykat · 16/03/2020 22:44

Self employed here, and after next Saturday i have no income, and live alone.
Thankfully i dont have rent or a mortgage to pay, and a couple of hundred in the bank to cover impending electric bill, but then what with everything else like food etc?

agentstarling · 16/03/2020 22:44

Don't mortgage companies give you a week off.

houselikeashed · 16/03/2020 22:47

yep, another theatre worker here. yet to find out what will happen regarding pay. How long do you reckon theatres will stay dark?

Fatasfooook · 16/03/2020 22:50

It makes me angry that we have experienced a decade of austerity because we found the cash to bail out the bankers but there will be no money to bail out the people.

Onemorehitandillcrumble · 16/03/2020 22:54

Yes. DH very high risk, no life insurance as expired & unrenewable due to high health risks.
He will get it, he is going to die
DC & I will be left homeless & in debt

GabsAlot · 16/03/2020 23:03

landlords would be mad to start evicting people-m not saying forever but they have to let this all calm down before expecting money

lets hope the banks stop mortgage payments for a while as well

justasking111 · 16/03/2020 23:18

Landlords will not be evicting tenants, who would they find to take all these properties on. They will like everyone else if they have mortgages go to their lender and ask for a freeze on their payments.
