and still wont close schools to keep our kids safe, its strange and barbaric, and i have lost all faith in our government and will always hate them from this day on.

applemango9 · 16/03/2020 17:44

I really want my kids to off school but my DH objects. I feel terrible.

Iamthewombat · 16/03/2020 17:46

If the DC are off school and the parents work, who looks after the DC ?

Most likely the grandparents, which is another good reason to keep the schools open.

cabbageking · 16/03/2020 17:47

As parents if you are worried keep them off.

You don't need school to close to keep your child at home if genuinely worried.

The responsibility for your children lies with the parents and not the Government.

There is no issue with attendance at this time

ShowYourself · 16/03/2020 17:49

Just remove your children.

itispersonal · 16/03/2020 17:50

I don't see children being at school endangering their lives as they are shown not be effected badly by the virus.

It is the mass gathering of children which I don't get and mass gathering of adults collecting children from school. Children spread germs which is my worry for parents and grandparents.

But if youve got to self isolate for 14 days if anyone has symptoms, school are only going to be open for those parents who can't/ won't take time off.

HonestlyItsFine · 16/03/2020 17:55

I think unfortunately a lot of people can't be trusted to be sensible. Just see some of the threads here.
If schools closed, a lot of people would be travelling around, taking the kids out to "entertain" them, and ignoring all guidance.

Newuname199987 · 16/03/2020 18:01

Schools WILL close at the right time. Everyone is an ‘expert’ now and knows best. Timing is crucial and we will be given information as this develops. Also it’s not Boris just making decisions on this so no point in slagging him off, any government would be getting advice from the best scientists in the country, there aren’t different scientists for each party that may be in government. Anyone is free to make a decision on keeping their kids off if they wish.

spaghettiforhair · 16/03/2020 18:04

They've said that adults with underlying health conditions should isolate for 12 weeks - but not children with underlying health conditions- children should keep going into school!

No, he said those that are "vulnerable" should isolate for 12 weeks.

Nickster414 · 16/03/2020 18:04

53 deaths now to corona :(

OP posts:
Butterwhy · 16/03/2020 18:04

Cases rose in every country schools were closed initially as people moved about more. This will happen here (Mumsnet isn't representative of necessarily of everyone's worries etc), until they wait until people are calling out and desperate for it. Which I bet will be soon. Very soon. I don't usually recommend lying for anything, but it would be a shame if you wanted to keep your child off as someone in the household had symptoms, wouldn't it.

Chloemol · 16/03/2020 18:06

Are you going to look after the kids for all those in emergency services, nhs etc, or are you happy those people also don’t work and if so don’t start moaning when there are no nurses or doctors cos they are at home looking after their kids

FrivolousPancake · 16/03/2020 18:12

I’m watching horrified from Ireland.

It’s like mass murder.

Oldbutstillgotit · 16/03/2020 18:13

@ Iamthewombat exactly ! Normally I would step in to look after DGS but I am in isolation plus DH is 75 .

Noodlenosefraggle · 16/03/2020 18:14

Mumsnet is also not representative of all parents. Children with engaged parents will be getting them to work on google classrooms or reading books etc. The ones who are disadvantaged by having crap parents will be disadvantaged further by being left to their own devices for weeks and weeks on end with no structured education. Not to mention those affected by domestic abuse etc. The schools will close but until then, if you are prepared to do an extra 2 weeks of homeschooling, keep them off.Children recover quickly from this. The disadvantage to some children of a term off school will be huge, especially if their peers have been made to work at home and they haven't.

Butterbear86 · 16/03/2020 18:17

Ok so if as a t1 I self isolate - what’s the point if my children are still in school?
Data shows most likely to catch from close family / friend - obviously. Seems ridiculous to limit going out entirely if my children are still in school.

StillbreathingStillhere · 16/03/2020 18:17

if so don’t start moaning when there are no nurses or doctors cos they are at home looking after their kids

Strangely, other countries seem to be managing

Canshopwillshop · 16/03/2020 18:21

@FrivolousPancake - mass murder!!! Don’t be ridiculous.
All these self made experts shouting for schools to close and yet on the other threads are slagging govt off for telling people not to go to pubs, clubs, restaurants etc.

LastTrainEast · 16/03/2020 18:23

Nickster414 are you saying you're still sending them even though you think that? No one is stopping you keeping them at home.

GrumpyHoonMain · 16/03/2020 18:25

Schools need to be kept open because there aren’t enough childminders for everyone and there will be a huge number of stupid shits who dump their kids on vulnerable grandparents like in every other European country that closed schools.

As most healthy kids (even those with asthma) are considered low risk for complications with this disease the best place for them is in school for the moment. It seems likely that if this is a fast mutating coronavirus like the cold viruses are then vaccines will be needed every year (and may not work at all for the most vulnerable people) - it makes sense for less vulnerable groups to catch it slowly and then become immune until the next presentation. All the research regarding complications in healthy people has admitted there are a lot of unknowns regarding health as in China most young smokers are deemed ‘healthy’ while in Italy and Japan health status was taken anecdotally.

Canshopwillshop · 16/03/2020 19:11

@Newuname199987 - Absolutely agree. All these people slagging off Boris for acting on the advice of leading medical experts when they clearly know best 🙄

Blueberryham · 16/03/2020 19:21

Butterbear, this is my dilemma. And I assume lots of other parents up and down the country.

Blueberryham · 16/03/2020 19:22

I guess it’s a time to make your own informed decision and not trust the government

doubleshotespresso · 16/03/2020 19:29

cabbageking

There is no issue with attendance at this time

There is at our DC school who are still not authorising absence unless symptoms are there

Canshopwillshop · 16/03/2020 21:08

@Blueberryham - and how do you make your ‘informed’ decision? Do you take the advice of the highly experienced, independent CMO based on extensive research and tailored to our own country/community or on your own googling or what other countries completely different to our own have done?

TK1930 · 16/03/2020 21:12
