I have severe copd I have stopped smoking two years ago but the damage was already done. I suffer with respiratory illnesses terribly I am worried about sending dc to school in case I catch this virus.

I just wish that the option to remove children from school was available for people in the at risk group and no we wouldn't be going to McDonald's or cinemas we would be staying in trying to go out as little as possible.

But I know I'm going to get put in prison if I refuse to send my dc I can't win either way I'll just have to pray I don't catch it and that if I do I make it out alive.

What a shame that all your kids have diarrhoea this week, wink wink ;)

DustyMaiden · 16/03/2020 15:33

Don’t send them, you have to do what is right for your family. You won’t get sent to prison.

My DH is is an at risk group. We have removed both DC (Yr12 and Yr8) from school as of this morning. School has been incredibly understanding and kind about it. Took kids in this morning to pick up books and agree plans with teachers to continue working from home.

Have been told that this will be recorded as authorised absence.

If it helps, the main comorbidities inthose that have died seem to be hypertension and diabetes.
Certainly, ds1s respitory consultant is unconcerned.

Theodoreb · 16/03/2020 16:16

I kept them of this week as Thursday I had a cough so have till a week today to decide whether to send them hoping schools close by then or something is put in place if not I may talk to head be open and honest and see what she says.

Your DS's respiratory consultant is unconcerned about a Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus????

yoikes · 16/03/2020 21:04

In children, yes.

ChequerBoard · 16/03/2020 21:16

Well that's an interesting view. Are you happy to take that risk? I certainly wouldn't be.

yoikes · 16/03/2020 21:19

He's a specialist in his field.
He knows far more about it than I do...

ChequerBoard · 16/03/2020 21:30

Good luck then.

SinkGirl · 16/03/2020 21:39

OP if you have symptoms you’ll now all need to self isolate for 14 days anyway. I think there’s a good chance schools will close in that time plus there’s Easter. Hang in there Flowers

Theodoreb · 17/03/2020 17:07

Thanks for all replies I will be keeping my dc of another week and yes we are self isolating, just curious do I have a leg to stand on with the school when I explain to head teacher that I have severe copd regularly take steroids e.t.c to get their absences authorized?

Yep so think so OP. As I said up thread I have removed both my DC from school have had in confirmed in writing that their absence is authorised.

I have also just had a call from the school nurse as both my DC have asthma and are as such are also in the vulnerable category, and therefore we are now being advised to keep them off school anyway.

Theodoreb · 17/03/2020 17:56

@ChequerBoard thank you so much I will inform school if they don't close.
