Fibromyalgia- am I at risk?

JulietteLeGall · 16/03/2020 15:23

Recently diagnosed after months of hell.

Don't know an awful lot about it yet as still in denial that I have a lifelong illness. Am I at risk with regard to CV?

I have it too, awful isnt it? I haven't seen it on any lists. I have other probs too as I think I am at risk as I am older too. I don't think the fibro is a cause for concern tho

I have FM and currently have (without a test) almost certainly got CV. I'm mid 40s.

It's knocked me like bad flu but don't think the FM is going to make me vulnerable as the danger is around lungs and heart with FM doesn't affect.

Isn’t it a diagnosis based on the exclusion of everything else? So not a “condition” as such? Therefore I don’t think everyone who “has” it can be at risk, no. Have you consulted your doctor?

Fibromyalgia alone would not put you at risk, hope this is reassuring.

Thank you. Heard a lot about links to rheumatoid so I think that's what got me worried.

Thank you everyone.

Splitsunrise - it's classed as a chronic condition

I have fibro, I don’t consider myself more at risk in a life threatening sense. My main concern is that I’ll have a worse flare up after, if I catch it, which sucks obviously. But I feel that dread every time I even get a cold so in that sense it’s not much different

Hiya. I have had fibromyalgia for several years, it's a dreadful condition for anyone to have. I don't think it will make a difference as to being more vulnerable to contacting cv. I do think it may make having and getting over the virus a bit worse as it will bring on a flair of symptoms which can be horrendous. Also stress can make symptoms much worse and obviously this is an extremely stressful time for everyone.

No, I really don't think so.

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia nearly 20 years ago, and have done a fair bit of research into it over that time.

Fibromyalgia is not a condition that increases risk as it does not compromise vital organs such as heart, lungs, kidneys, liver.

It also does not compromise in a clinically significant way, the immune system. There is a difference between feeling that you ‘catch every bug’, but clinical immunosuppression is a different thing.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for all the replies. Whilst so many of you are here can I ask for some tips on coping? Fatigue and pain are hardest to cope with and have found a hot bath is the only thing to help - I sometimes have 3 or 4 in one day.

Struggling daily - even have to get the DC to change gears in the car for me on the school run.

Also tinnitus and vertigo tip me over the edge some days.

I can't get my head around the fact this is forever

Probably not but it will probably trigger a flare. However, without knowing what some of the "underlying conditions" are it's hard to know if it's just ANY underlying conditions. Obviously I know that some have been mentioned specifically.

I have fibro. Been struggling for years. I dont think we are more at risk but it will probably make it harder to get over as our bodies react to illness and stress by kindly going into a flare up. I'm always in pain and fatigued but if I'm under stress or pick up a bug the pain is worse. Been feeling really dizzy today and feel like brewing something. Hope it doesnt make you feel worse. I have meds for it and prescribed pain killers so that helps. Xx

I have RA, it isn't the illness that puts me at risk but the drugs I have to take for it - that might be why it's on the lists.
