Aibu/wwyd -cv holiday
Holidayreservation · 16/03/2020 14:47
We’ve got a holiday booked for the beginning of June to a less developed/touristy island.
I also live in a 3 generational home (no children) of which the eldest is 90 - we’ve put a lot of measures in so far.
If we cancel the holiday now we can pretty much get a full refund but if we don’t do it now we could potentially loose loads of money. I’m a full time carer of my Nan and I really cannot become ill even if there’s still flights to the island come June.
My partner wants to see what happens and if there’s still flights out he’ll still want to go - the others were going with aren’t high risk at all.
Aibu for wanting to cancel and hoping that we can go away in autumn instead? It’s a lot of money to loose/can’t afford to get ill but he thinks I’m being OTT.

How long can you wait and still get most of it refunded? Is the deadline today or do you have another week or two?
Holidayreservation · 16/03/2020 14:54
@minipie
We have a week but I don’t want to leave it until the last day to spring it on the other travellers.
While it would be a huge inconvenience for them I can’t see why we couldn’t go in autumn or even next year. I think it would be kind to give them notice.
My partner isn’t even in conversation with me over it as I’m apparently being OTT.

With the way everything is going, I would grasp firmly of the control you have, which is to cancel it yourselves. Otherwise you risk it being cancelled later on with no guarantee you'll get your money back.
Especially as you live with someone in their 90s.
minipie · 16/03/2020 15:01
Yes I would start discussing it with the others now. It is very difficult to know how things will look by early June. Could be mostly over or could be smack in the middle of the peak. If you don’t think insurance will cover then I’d be cancelling personally and plan something nice for later.

If I lived with a 90-year old, I would be social distancing as much as possible. There is an 88-year old man who's died after contact with someone who'd been on a skiing holiday to Italy. Imagine being responsible for that.

I feel like I’m becoming paranoid - I’ve asked my partner to stop going for the gym etc but he said there’s nothing on under 70s isolating themselves.
I feel like my head is going to explode. We need to cancel - I branch this with him when he’s finished his meeting.
Does anyone have any links to hand of how the peak is set to be in May (I’ve seen plenty but I’ve also seen hundreds the last few days and don’t know where I’ve seen it).
It’s barking mad for us to not cancel. Insurance wouldn’t cover us cancelling as there’s nothing wrong with us just our household.
GCAcademic · 16/03/2020 15:17
If you look at last week's press conference with Boris Johnson, the Chief Medical Officer and the Chief Scientific Officer, they said that the aim is to delay the peak so that it will be in ten weeks time.
HopeYouStepOnALego · 16/03/2020 15:27
I was supposed to go to the US on Wednesday this week but have had to rebook my flights for June. I'm really not optimistic the holiday will go ahead in June as I believe we'll have barely peaked by then, let alone recovered from this. I could only change my flights once so I'm hoping nearer the time I'll be able to get my money back.
GrumpyHoonMain · 16/03/2020 15:30
Just cancel it. Your priority is quite rightly your nan
Holidayreservation · 16/03/2020 16:06
My partner said there was all the hype about swine flu and the normal flu could kill here - are we never going to leave the house again? Is all I keep getting.
GrumpyHoonMain · 16/03/2020 18:10
10m people died from swine flu in India even though they get regular flu too. This epidemic conversely might be better managed in India than Europe so we should worry
