I didn't vote because it would be wrong to say that I am not at all concerned but I am certainly not dwelling on it. My husband and I would both be high risk if we got it. He is just over 70 , I am just under 70. He has multiple health problems including heart failure, I have lung fibrosis as a result of an autoimmune problem. I have reduced going out a lot , shopped online etc and washing hands more. No point being over worried though. Apart from taking sensible precautions there is nothing we can do about it. I am using the situation as a bit of an excuse to be lazy. The "boomer remover" joke is sounding less funny though!

LadyAprilLucy · 16/03/2020 11:56

Yes, I'm fairly worried (and I'm normally very calm). I'm 64 next month and I'm diabetic. So yes.

pigsDOfly · 16/03/2020 12:15

I'm worried, aren't most people? I'm 71, and and have high blood pressure, otherwise I'm healthy and active.

I'm more worried at the moment about how over 70s isolating for 4 months is likely to pan out, or if it's even workable.

Is the government seriously suggesting that all over 70 year olds stay shut in their homes for 4 months? A lot of old people are isolated enough it is. Is the government planning how they're going to deal with all the depression and ill health that will ensue?

And what about the ones that have to work to supplement their pensions, what about the ones that do vital child care for their working children.

Can't help feeling that, like every thing else that's happening here around covid19, this really hasn't been thought through.

Surely a more sensible approach would be to do what Spain is doing, that surely would be a better idea for older people for the next 4 months, just keep activity to a minimum.

What about closing school, restaurants and pubs, closing boarders.

Sorry, rant over.

I’m worried for my parents. I live in the US, while they’re back in England. My dad has high blood pressure and is prone to bronchitis.

I’ve ordered them a few weeks of online shopping, as I believe any day now the over-70s will be asked to stay home.

Theyrecomingtotakemeawayhaha · 16/03/2020 12:24

I'm 60,luckily healthy and a front line NHS worker, definatly will be looking after the very sick patients .
More worried about my mum who I won't be able to see.She is in her 80s and is busy getting her affairs in order just incase and setting up a family conference call group.

Redshoeblueshoe · 16/03/2020 12:33

I'm over 60, DH nearly 70. I'm not worried for myself, but I'm worried for my younger relatives, who have gone into complete lockdown, on medical advice, knowing that this could go on for months

SenecaFallsRedux · 16/03/2020 12:35

I'm worried, but staying calm. I'm in the US. I still work, but part-time now, and I am lucky in that, thanks to technology, the projects I am currently working on can be done from home. DH and I are generally healthy but because of our age, we are taking extra precautions, mainly social distancing.

karala · 16/03/2020 12:40

I'm not worried but I'm cautious and being more vigilant on hand-washing. I'm 64 with no underlying health issues.

SarahInAccounts · 16/03/2020 12:44

Terrified.

Immunosuppresed and asthmatic. In remission from cancer.

LastTrainEast · 16/03/2020 12:44

Concerned I suppose, but not worried. My biggest problem is I might starve since I rely on online shopping and the panic buyers are leaving nothing behind.

katseyes7 · 16/03/2020 12:46

l'm 61. l have asthma and an autoimmune condition. History of lung problems, allergic to most antibiotics (so far as l'm aware, there's only one l haven't had a reaction to in the past few years).
l've had pneumonia in the past, and 10 years ago l had pulmonary infiltrates. l was off work for 10 weeks, and needed 9 courses of antibiotics and 7 of steroids to get it under control. l suspect the heavy intake of antibiotics then may have contributed to sensitising me to that particular type. Also, my immune system is a bit hyped up, not sure if that's down to so many steroids over the years.
l work on a supermarket checkout. l need to work until l get my state pension, so yes, l'm a bit concerned.
However, l feel fine just now, l'm being extra careful with hand washing, and l don't usually venture out of the house much anyway apart from work.
Work's been ridiculously busy over this weekend though (l just went back on Friday after 2 weeks holiday.
Unless l do develop symptoms and am forced to self isolate, l'll go to work. l've only been in my job for 9 months and l can't imagine how they'd react if l announced l was doing that "just in case".

l'm sure there are people who have more need to be concerned than me. l'm just taking things as they come at the moment.

mydogisthebest · 16/03/2020 12:46

I am 66 next month. Not word for myself but for elderly parents and DH. He is younger than me but has health problems.

He is still working as self employed and cannot afford not to. We have cut down on going out though

Redshoeblueshoe · 16/03/2020 12:47

Sarah do you have someone who can shop for you ?

SilverBirchWithout · 16/03/2020 12:52

Yes I’m worried, but not so much for myself and DH.
DS works in the NHS in a very front-line role, he’s an anaesthetist. Evidence from both China & Italy is suggesting that healthcare workers are likely to react more severely to infection.
Trying not to be over stressed about it though, just feel a little helpless.

Saturatedfattyacid · 16/03/2020 12:52

Yes. I am early 60s. Teach at two large colleges full time as not able to retire yet. Asthma. Kidney issues. I have no faith at all in the government. I am hoping alcohol wipes and hand washing will keep me safe. Not ready to go yet.

longwayoff · 16/03/2020 12:53

Concerned but not worried. Irritated by inadequate and conflicting information from government which hampers plans instead of helping. Extremely poor handling of this issue which appears to have ignored all existing emergency plans.

pandarific · 16/03/2020 12:59

@katseyes7 in your position I really think you should tell your employer you're at risk and ask to be moved to a less customer facing role in the shop (in the back, helping with deliveries) - anything really.

Or, if you think they're unlikely to do their duty by you as a vulnerable person, I would honestly lie and tell them you are unwell and so are self isolating. In two weeks things may look very different, I'd buy yourself some time.

I never usually advocate lying, but in your shoes I'd be extremely careful. Thanks

scarbados · 16/03/2020 13:13

Yes, because I'm in a high risk group - 68, diabetic, immune system shot to pieces by previous chemo. But my main worry is for my husband who's a few years younger. He has severe asthma and COPD and is still working. I've managed to get some hand sanitiser for him to use at work and he's walking there and back instead of going on the bus.

We're due the money any day now from the sale of MIL's house so we could probably afford for him to retire now but he doesn't really want to so he's talking to HR this morning about his options for unpaid leave if we need to self-isolate.

In the meantime, I'm staying at home far more and only going for short walks in places I know there won't be crowds.

longearedbat · 16/03/2020 13:23

I am nearly 65 and have (managed) high blood pressure . I am concerned and aware, but not worried overmuch about the virus itself, if I die I die, not much I can do about it. I am quite concerned about how this will effect the world economy though. I think this virus will be around for a long time before we get to grips with it, we are all going to be knocked back into the dark ages financially speaking.
My h's father is 93 and has dementia. He has a carer 3 times a day. We worry that this system we have for him could all go horribly wrong in the next few months.
I think it's interesting about the air quality improving though, due to fewer planes/car movements. The lack of contrails reminds me of when that Icelandic volcano exploded in 2010 bringing air traffic to a halt. We got true cloudless skies for once.
I have got a simply massive list of jobs to do in the house and garden. I will just get on with things and keep busy. Life goes on - with a bit of luck.
Finally, as we will be saving money by not going on holiday, I am going to treat myself to some really good wine so I can sit in the garden, in splendid isolation, with a good book, a comfy chair and a few glasses of chilled plonk.

AuntieMarys · 16/03/2020 13:24

We are 60 and not worried about getting the virus. Very worried about the stock market and economy.

katseyes7 · 16/03/2020 13:26

pandarific l did think of that, but l work on checkouts as l have arthritis and joint hypermobility, l physically can't do warehouse work or anything heavy.
All l can do is make them aware (which l will) and see how it goes.
