Getting DD home from uni

My DD is currently in Manchester and the uni have stopped face to face lectures and have brought end of term forwards to the 27th March. Since other unis are closing her friends are getting a bit jittery about going home. I have advised her to stay until we get the notification that unis are closing (or when all her friends are leaving) or we are all put into lockdown. My thinking is that she could potentially be home for the rest of the summer - I want her to get the most out of uni as once we are in lockdown I think it will be very boring and isolating for her and all of us.

Two queries in my mind are:

  • will we get sufficient notice of closure/lockdown to collect her
  • and what happens if at that time I or my DS have corona virus o r she does. Would we have to leave her there a couple more weeks potentially on her own and be able to collect her later.

(I won't even go into how DS will sit his A levels!).

Just go and get her now. She shouldn't be socialising anyway.

Cambridge is now basically closed. Colleges will support those unable to get home.

There will be no face-to-face teaching in the Easter term, and there will be no seated examinations. Everything is moving online, including Part II & III exams.

All non-critical staff have been asked to work from home.

My DD is doing Fine Art too and her uni closed last week to most other students but only yesterday for Fine Art students, it's not a course you can easily do online! I'm going to get her on Friday.
Her Uni have said if they totally vacate their halls and hand their keys back, they won't be charged rent for the summer term.

I'm going on Friday too. Fine art is tricky to do online! We will bring back as much stuff as possible.

We're going down at the weekend to clear out ds's room. Bloody hell, what a mess.

The situation, not his room... hopefully!Grin

As the rumours have spread about lockdown on Friday I decided to come up tonight to pick up DD. We are taking everything. Her housemates are going clubbing tonight! WTAF! It's v strange - she might not be back till the autumn. But sure what that means for her and her new BF.

Meanwhile my DF 90 still thinks we should come and visit him. I've refused because I could have the virus but one if my stupid sisters said she'd go on Friday. He hadn't bought any extra food or supplies at all! I've refused.

Bouledeneige I think you've made sensible decisions all round. I'm a Headteacher so I have a school to close first before I can go and get my DD on Friday/Saturday.

We're braving a return to the Uni with dd tomorrow, as they've asked students to clear their rooms, so we'll do that. What a strange first year they're having. DD said today she's a bit upset about it, but that it would be worse if it were her final year....

Otherwise, I think we'll be OK supplies--wise. There are people who can do shopping for us if we do have to self-isolate completely, I mean all 3 of us.

There are rumours that we're going to be locked down by the end of the week but I'm not convinced, I think that's more likely to be scare-mongering.

Hope you all manage to get your families home and safe, and that you get all the supplies you need for the time being.

I've heard that Italians are NOT PANIC BUYING! How can they behave so well when we're being idiots?
