I think there are an awful lot of people self-isolating at the moment who do not have Covid-19.

I think that may be me, my husband and one of our adult children who came home today from London with a slight cough. I don’t think he’s got cv but we have to do the 14 days now.

At least it takes us off the streets for a while, I suppose.

Though we now have my 82-year old mother who has had blood cancer recently by herself 75 miles away. If she falls ill with cv I will have to go to her as there is nobody else. Though I suppose if she gets cv we aren’t bringing anything else to her if I drive straight there without stopping. So many hard choices.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 16/03/2020 20:00

Yup.

Or 12 weeks since I have an at-risk child.

DesdemonaRosa · 16/03/2020 19:55

Question for those of you self isolating...

Are you now expecting to extend it to 14 days and are the rest of your household also joining you in isolation for 2 weeks?

Just wondering how people are handling the transition from the old guidelines to the new?

Popuppippa · 16/03/2020 15:39

@sewingsinger

I think there's a really strong case for antibody testing but there are obvious manufacturing and cost implications (if it's even available yet). I think if it could be done then NHS and frontline services should be prioritised then the wider public. I think there are an awful lot of people self-isolating at the moment who do not have Covid-19.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 16/03/2020 15:38

@ sewingsinger that was exactly my argument to the doctors when we were in A&E

However the figures show they have tested 39k people and 38k were negative so far. So I think they are worried the money is going in the wrong direction.

sewingsinger · 16/03/2020 12:41

If people are immune after they have had it then the logical thing to do woud be to test so that those people can relax a bit and help out in the community generally/volunteer/go and see their elderly parents etc.

adaline · 16/03/2020 12:37

@twinnywinny14 absolutely.

I'm self-employed and currently in isolation due to a temperature and cough. I'm losing an entire weeks' pay as I cannot do my job from home. I'd still rather isolate and not pass on any potential infection to more vulnerable members of society.

I really do appreciate it's hard for some people but the reason cases keep going up and up is because people refuse to stay home and don't think the rules apply to them. There's already talk in the news about enforced quarantine and fines for people who don't comply.

www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2020/03/15/public-face-prison-1000-fine-refusing-coronavirus-tests/

twinnywinny14 · 16/03/2020 12:30

@adaline because there are huge consequences and impact for some people if they stay at home, which could be unnecessary if they don’t have it now and get it later on meaning more time off at a later date. I am self isolating luckily in full pay but if that changes then I will definitely lose my home

adaline · 16/03/2020 11:27

The thing is, as the NHS is no longer testing people, we can't know for certain, so why on earth can everyone not err on the side of caution and bloody well stay home?

WingingItSince1973 · 16/03/2020 11:23

I've had a sore throat for weeks but I usually get bad throats anyway. Stuffed up nose and rotten headache. Again I get headaches alot. My body is aching but I have fibromyalgia and this is usual. It's so hard to judge this. I'm happy to self isolate though I pick up 4 year old gs everyday from school. I've asked dd to nip out from work to collect him as shes local. Hoping her company will suggest wfh soon. It's such a minefield when you have conditions which have same symptoms xxx

ruralliving19 · 16/03/2020 11:22

None of us can know, can we? My DD12 is on her second day of a fever. Very occasional tickly cough, temperature cycling between 99 and about 101. I'm just thankful she's feeling okay in herself and I can work from home. I've read that if it is coronavirus, the temperature usually goes and then the bad cough comes. So we just have to wait and see.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 16/03/2020 11:16

Well I was blind then.

I thought the kids awful sore throats were the only thing that made it not corona (they had the classic symptoms), but I was wrong. It was part of the packaged deal.

Thanks for that.

twinnywinny14 · 16/03/2020 11:13

I have had a cough since last Tuesday and been at home since Thursday as felt unwell with it and sore/tight chest. I had temperature on Saturday and yesterday, gone today. I’m off work today but wondering if I should go back tomorrow or self isolate for longer? Cough started 7 days ago but temp on weekend is confusing me? Boss messaged to ask if I’ll be back tomorrow so obv expecting me to be?

adaline · 16/03/2020 11:11

NHS advice says absolutely do not go for a walk. Why would you risk it?

HasaDigaEebowai · 16/03/2020 11:10

These are the symptoms

Fidgety31 · 16/03/2020 11:08

I don’t have the strength to go for a walk !
Absolutely drained

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2020 11:05

It's infuriating.
DS1 (12) has a something. Sore throat, cough, headache, no real fever but still. Took today off school (Australia) and when I was talking to the principal at DS2's school, we ummed and ahhed about whether or not DS2 should be at school as well - decided in the end that it would be better not, so he's at home today too, despite having nothing wrong with him (he's thrilled, btw!)

Spoke to the GP surgery and they said they wouldn't swab DS1 unless his temp went over 38 deg (was 37.7 yesterday). Now he's getting snotty though, so I'm thinking it's just a cold. Phew!

But this is so difficult - we have parents pulling their kids out of school just in case, all school events have been cancelled (govt directive), including sports events etc.

I get it, of course I do - better to be safe than sorry and we need to limit the spread as much as possible - but at the moment it all feels a bit panic stations and like there's a lot of over-reaction. There isn't. I also know that. It just feels like it.

LuluJakey1 · 16/03/2020 11:02

A government minister has said on tv this morning that going for a walk is fine .

adaline · 16/03/2020 10:59

Why do people still think self-isolation doesn't apply to them?!

LuluJakey1 · 16/03/2020 10:52

Well we are in the house, and will stay in until we drive to a large, empty beach later (Druridge Bay) for a walk. If there was anyone else there, we would be nowhere near them- it is miles long. DH will pick up DS1 from school. My cough disappeared within 48 hours. I have had no raised temperature at all and have a sniffle- literally that, not a runny nose, not sneezing, just slightly sniffy.
Apart from a dry, irritable cough - which is in no way awful or hacking- DD has no symptoms of anything. No temperature raise, no sore chest, no aches and pains, no sore throat, no sore head. She is full of beans. Have kept her off nursery and will do for the rest of the week.
I am being struct about handwashing and am using hand sanitiser on us.
We are not isolated from DH and DS1 and Ds2 (7m).

Fidgety31 · 16/03/2020 10:37

BizarreBizarre I went to Walt Disney world in Florida - a complete germ fest !

adaline · 16/03/2020 10:36

*continuous cough, even.

adaline · 16/03/2020 10:36

@LuluJakey1 why on earth are you not self-isolating?!

The NHS advice is quite clear. If you have a continuous cold OR a temperature of above 37.8 degrees then you need to stay at home for seven days.

Selfish.

OhLook · 16/03/2020 10:33

You should be self isolating FFS LuluJakey1! You can't just put the elderly and immunosuppressed at risk because you think it's fine and nothing to worry about. Some people only get mild symptoms.
