AIBU to ask MNHQ to update talk guidelines?

The world is in the grip of a pandemic.

Lots of posters on MN are living in places where lockdowns, school closures and a high number of deaths are happening already or have family who are there.

Usually there is a lot of robust back and forth about any controversial topic but would it be unreasonable for MNHQ to update talk guidelines or at least request that posters do not belittle or ridicule the fears of others.

Apparently Mumsnet has 10 million unique users per month. If the projections of 80% infection rate or even 50% world wide come to pass that is 5 to 8 million Mumsnet users becoming infecting - the vast majority with mild or no symptoms. But the more optimistic projections give a 1% case fatality rate. 50,000 to 80,000 Mumsnet families losing a family member.

We don’t have to agree but surely now is a time for kindness.

Yes - agreed. Some of the pile-ons even after a poster has begged them to stop -and the original post is about anxiety - are horrible.

The Talk guidelines already basically say to be nice and respectful of each other, no personal attacks, etc.
If you see something you don't like, report it. MNHQ will delete it if a poster crosses the line. They're generally pretty good.

I'd like to see the guidelines changed for people posting opinions as facts, presenting dodgy home-made statistics as fact and scaremongering.
