Long term lung damage after recovering from Coronavirus

This is starting to be reported, along with the news that plenty of young people with no pre existing conditions are needing intensive care treatment. Don't assume that you will recover without any problems just because you're young fit and healthy. Reports are saying about 10% need hospitalisation. Our hospitals are going to run out of capacity really quickly.

This is now starting to make me very angry at our government's handling of the situation.

There are several news outlets reporting this, ITV, the Independent and the latest report is in the Times.

OP, chill. Anything reported by the mainstream media, ESPECIALLY IT-FUCKING-V is formally categorised as Fake News.

Well this is something I’ve been mulling about the past few days. What are the long term effects? I guess we won’t really know for a couple of years when they track patients that recovered

It’s far too early too well. It takes months to recover from severe pneumonia, especially if it’s severe enough to require ventilation. I wouldn’t panic yet, we really don’t know. People may make a full recovery.

^ tell not well!

I am amazed that In Taiwan there has been only one death. It seems that we are learning nothing from Taiwan and are behaving like Italy waiting for people to die.

How do you know there’s long term lung damage when it’s a very recent virus?

I agree the number of cases that turn in to pneumonia is worrying though.

SorrelBlackbeak · 16/03/2020 20:19

The virus causes ARDS - acute respiratory distress syndrome. That happens fairly often and the effects are known including long term damage.

Because it has been reported in THE LANCET, which is the most esteemed, peer reviewed, highly regarded, factual, science and evidence based publication in the medical world, worldwide. It’s the only publication I really trust, although it’s not typically for the lay person as it’s very high on medical jargon. Family are doctors hence my faith in the information they publish.
Believe it, long term lung and organ damage have been reported from studies in China and they don’t yet know why. More research and data needed.

sneeuw · 17/03/2020 01:37

They can't do longitudinal tests but they can see they type of damage and recognise if it's similar to other known types of damage people have.

I am 43 years old and until very recently fit and healthy.
After 12 days of "flu" i was admitted to hospital Saturday with breathing difficulties.
I have Pnuemonia (sp?) and spent 36 hours on oxygen, Intraveous antibiotics. I have been tested for Coviod 19 and await results but Doctor is adamant that it is the virus that has taken me from fit and active mum of two to someone that is out of breath walking across my landing in less than two weeks.
Time will tell on long term damage but i am advised that it will be at least 4 months.

From the argument this will only effect the old, there were 9 people in my isolation unit all of them appeared to be well below 50 and all were requiring oxygen to breath.
