Just that really. Govt guidance does not make clear.

@Monst3ra

That's absolutely shocking - i'd be emailing the school the official guidelines and asking why they think they're exempt from them? It beggars belief that people are struggling with this really simple instruction, especially schools!

CaptainBrickbeard · 16/03/2020 11:16

Schools need to be told now that they will not be judged an attendance figures this year. They are under immense pressure to keep the figures high and they must be reassured that this won’t count now.

twinnywinny14 · 16/03/2020 11:17

It’s 7 days from the start of the symptoms, not until it’s gone or until you feel better. And only after 7 days if temp has gone, otherwise it’s stay at home and speak to nhs 111. Still having the cough doesn’t need to stay at home after the 7 days x

Frankly, if schools are worried about attendance figures in current circumstances, I’d be really worried they have a grip on what’s happening

Derbygerbil · 16/03/2020 11:22

@Monst3ra

Your head appears to one of those who still isn’t taking this seriously. Ignoring Government instructions on this could be career ending for him. If your child infected a teacher or child with immunodeficiency that could be devastating.

CaptainBrickbeard · 16/03/2020 11:26

I agree Derby but schools aren’t attendance-obsessed for their own amusement. They are severely penalised for not keeping this figures high. Like workplaces who are still pursuing punitive absence policies right now, they all need to be told unequivocally that attendance is no one’s priority during this pandemic and that no organisations or individuals can be punished for staying home. Until that is out there, confusion and uncertainty and fear will abound.

minipie · 16/03/2020 11:26

The reason for the 7 days is not because you will be unwell for 7 days.

It is because the medical experts believe you stop being infections 7 days after the cough/fever symptoms started.

So you can have a fever for 2 days, feel better on the 3rd day but still be infectious for 4 more days.

Derbygerbil · 16/03/2020 12:35

@CaptainBrickbeard

But things have changed fundamentally.... It seems you’re still living in the world of last week. Time to catch up!

Can you imagine schools being penalised for not stringently requiring pupils to attend in the current environment? It would be insane.

Orchidflower1 · 16/03/2020 12:38

@Monst3ra you MUST adhere to the 7 days. The plum you spoke to on the phone at your school is WRONG!!! no ifs/ buts

Derbygerbil · 16/03/2020 12:38

A head worrying about your school attendance figures makes about as much sense as worrying about missing yoga class as you call the fire brigade out as your house burns down.

CaptainBrickbeard · 16/03/2020 12:39

No I can’t imagine it! But I don’t blame schools for not knowing what to do. I’m sure there won’t be consequences but until the government say it, it’s difficult for schools to act unilaterally. My point is just that I think govt instructions need to be crystal clear and unambiguous at the moment. My kids are off, we are self isolating with symptoms, I promise I am not still living in last week. I just feel sympathy for schools. And I am seeing a lot of reports of workers being penalised for sickness right now - a lot of organisations have not yet caught up to reality. They need to be made to do so.

Monst3ra · 16/03/2020 14:25

I've been in touch with school and told them i will be keeping him off for 7 days regardless of him being better.

The advice to send him back if he's feeling better came from the headmaster so it's concerning if that's the advice they're giving others in similar situations.

Sorry to hijack the thread @lumene.

Really12345 · 16/03/2020 14:30

If you use 111 online it takes you though exactly what you need to do and gives clearer advice at the end than the generic webpage

7 days from onset of symptoms even if well. If you still have a fever at 7 days stay isolated (and call 111 as you are probably pretty sick by then). If you still have a cough you can go out. If you feel really unwell at any time call 111

Lumene · 16/03/2020 15:03

No worries at all @Monst3ra really important to get this sorted.
