Cruises

Is anyone else wondering why cruises are still going ahead? Just read about another one today with a few confirmed cases of corona and a lot of suspected ones. Cruise ships are proving to be breeding grounds for it, surely if air travel is being severely cut back cruises should be stopped?

Many cruise ships are evacuating staff. Many ships have staff on board who now cannot return to their own country due to restrictions on flights. My friend is coming home tomorrow despite her contract not finishing for another three months as it will be her only opportunity. I’d bet there’s very few people actually boarding cruises right now.

I hope this is the end of the cruise industry. The environmental impact of these floating cities is beyond belief.

I agree cruises should probably be stopped - it must increase the risk factor significantly.

Sherloidbaisherloid · 15/03/2020 17:13

When you think of all the passengers, 500-600 odd all from different countries/cities etc and then all going back home the risk must be massive. Any of them could be a super spreader

Surely they are behind airline industry for that award ?

Cruise ships are no longer allowed to dock at my local city. I wonder how many destinations actually are allowing them to dock now?

Nquartz · 15/03/2020 17:19

My in-laws are due to go on one around 19 April, they've been given the option to change the date but they're still waiting & seeing until nearer the time.

Wouldn't go on one now if you paid me!

Sherloidbaisherloid · 15/03/2020 17:19

There is one currently stuck in the Bahamas, not allowed to dock. There is talk of it making a 10 day sail back to Southampton as they have nowhere else to go! There are 5 confirmed cases on board with 20 odd suspected cases

Cruise ships were stopped from entering the ports where I live. A few days ago. And as much as I enjoy going on a cruise I fully support our governments decision.

habibihabibi · 15/03/2020 17:28

I'm with you Rhubarbpeony. The world would be a better place without cruise ships but would probably be replaced with equally eco destroying gigantic hotels for the cruise sheep.

Biancadelrioisback · 15/03/2020 17:41

I used to work on cruise ships. This will be a huge blow to many of the crew as they only get paid while onboard. One lady I used to work with sent every penny back home to her family as they had nothing. She was away from her young children for 8 months at a time and only took 3 weeks between contracts as she couldnt afford to be at home. This is so commons amongst the crew.

SallyLovesCheese · 15/03/2020 17:46

A friend's parents are on a cruise and both unwell and confined to their cabin. My friend can't get in touch with them, just trying to pass on messages through the cruise company. They're worried but trying to assume no news is good news. The ship docks on Wednesday, I think.

Nquartz · 15/03/2020 17:53

I heard on the news when the one docked in California, the reporter said they 'don't know where it is going but it can't stay here' and the crew weren't allowed to leave.

Terrifying

I live in the Highlands and the small town four miles away has loads of cruise ships docking every year and they have just announced they will not be banning them coming so next month hundreds of people a week are going to disembark and be bussed all over the Highlands visiting attractions. I know we have been lucky so far with only one confirmed case and that it will be coming one way or another but the possible scale of it with these ships coming in is definitely a worry.

P&O/Carnival are suspending operations for a month; Viking already have

JamesJaames · 15/03/2020 18:30

@SallyLovesCheese - do you know where the ship is due to dock on Wednesday? I'm trying to work out if this is the same ship which my in-laws are on.

SallyLovesCheese · 15/03/2020 23:00

@JamesJaames Southampton, maybe? It could be Tuesday, I can't remember exactly what she said!

Hope they're allowed to dock. Her parents are ill, she just wants to know they're home safely.

SallyLovesCheese · 15/03/2020 23:25

They've been to the Americas, the Caribbean and also parts of Europe, I think? If that helps you figure out if it's theirs or not.

Sorry, didn't mean to worry anyone.

JamesJaames · 16/03/2020 11:07

Thanks for the info - it's not the same cruise but similar issues across the board, I think. Hope your friends parents get home safely.
