Yes. Why anyone would want rationing is beyond me.

WinterCat · 15/03/2020 16:41

I think most of the bulk buying panic buyers have been shopping now and things will return to normal.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 15/03/2020 16:41

No it won't. Don't be stupid.

YgritteSnow · 15/03/2020 16:42

We need the daily mail and social media to stop ramping people up. We need some calm accurate reporting and a few quiet days and people will start to calm down with any luck.

Toria70 · 15/03/2020 16:43

It's been a revelation to be honest.

How do people manage a normal life when they are that thick??!

DoubleAction · 15/03/2020 16:46

I dont think people have, as a rule, been crazy bulk buying. The supermarket was very busy this morning but most trolley's were very reasonably stocked.

The shops stock for normal demand. If every household buys three more tins of beans, an extra pack of paracetamol and a new pack of toilet rolls 2 weeks before they would otherwise have done, the system is going to struggle.

When ''everyone" is telling people they will/should be locked in their houses within days what would you expect people to do?

SudokuQueen · 15/03/2020 16:46

Yeah I have been wondering this. 😂

Toothsil · 15/03/2020 16:49

I agree. I live in a small town which hasn't been too much different from normal until this weekend but we tried to do a normal food shoo this morning, the veg, bread, meat, milk and baking stuff was all completely stripped bare as were the freezers, toilet rolls, cleaning products, soap and painkillers. I'm absolutely sick of it. The supermarkets themselves are saying if everyone just bought enough for what they need, there would be enough for everybody.

PhilCornwall1 · 15/03/2020 16:50

It'll be a ration app surely? Hmm

ChocolateQuiltedShitPig · 15/03/2020 16:52

@ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal how rude.
Yuck

DoubleAction · 15/03/2020 16:54

OP if you believe that, you've just made things a whole lot worse. ATM people are making sure they've got enough in to last a week or two. If they think that what they can buy going forward is going to be rationed they'll feel the need to stock up even more. The need to feed your family is quite a powerful motivator.

Not a particularly clever move...

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 15/03/2020 16:57

I do think there needs to be strictly enforced rationing by the supermarkets. Once again the stupidity and selfishness of mankind comes to the fore. #bekind wasn’t it????

AnotherMurkyDay · 15/03/2020 16:57

We wouldn't get ration books. We'd get rationing cards which we could use online or in store. And a flourishing black market.

eeyore228 · 15/03/2020 16:58

This is sadly rife and not just associated with food. People have no regard or common sense when it comes to isolating or when to phone 111, with many bypassing them and just turning up in-hospital. Absolutely incapable of basic self-care for minor symptoms.

maddening · 15/03/2020 17:00

I think most of the issues at supermarkets are from most people getting "one extra" when shopping as opposed to lots of bulk buy panic shoppers.

I also think that people are looking for the panic, I was in Asda today in a meat aisle with loads of meat and people were - without irony - bemoaning the "selfishness" as there was no meat, whilst stood in an aisle with loads of meat 🙄 there was plenty in the shop today, yes low on some things but we weren't talking crisis point, yet that was what people were talking about throughout the shop "I can't believe it" "how selfish" "OMG there is nothing left" whilst stood in a shop full of food.

helpfulperson · 15/03/2020 17:00

I imagine there are civil servants working on a rationing plan. The bones of this will already be there as part of standard emergency planning. Its unlikely to be needed but not impossible.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 15/03/2020 17:00

On th plus side if people worry about their food running low they might cut back o. Portions. We might see a positive impact on the obeisity crisis, especially if people are prevented from eating out as much.

DGRossetti · 15/03/2020 17:02

It'll be a ration app surely?

That won't work. Or be hacked. Or both.

Gronky · 15/03/2020 17:02

Unless people are sitting down to eat 2kg of rice and lentils each for dinner, the rate of consumption will still match the rate of production and supply.

tryingtocatchthewind · 15/03/2020 17:05

Agree with others it’s just people buying one or two extras. Supermarkets don’t oversupply otherwise they would have lots of waste. If everyone buys one more pasta or one extra pack of toilet paper then that’s a huge increase in demand.

PhilCornwall1 · 15/03/2020 17:09

That won't work. Or be hacked. Or both.

It was tongue in cheek and not serious.

oneoffname · 15/03/2020 17:11

Our nearest food shop happens to be a superstore. Dh went early yesterday evening for a loaf of bread. When be got back he commented that it was a good job we weren't desperate for anything else at most of the shelves were completely empty.
Dc works at a distribution warehouse for the same company. He said he had never seen the shelves as empty as they were yesterday. Not just here and there, but throughout the warehouse. Many manufacturers already tend to work 24/7 so don't not have the capacity to increase their output, even assuming they can get everything they need - I've heard several companies are having trouble getting sufficient packaging as it usually ones from China.
I do think we will see some form of rationing of certain products, most probably linked to the various loyalty cards.

So was the idea of Boris Johnson being PM 15 years ago....

The recent Tescos hack really doesn't inspire confidence on that one ...

"So was the idea of Boris Johnson being PM 15 years ago...."

Grin

Or even 2 years ago. Great Mother preserve us.
