Ordinary colds - self isolate?

Blastandbollocks · 15/03/2020 16:07

DS has had a cold for two weeks (checked with 111 and they're happy it's a cold not Coronavirus). He has now passed this to me. Slightly runny nose, no temp, no cough. No contact with anyone remotely likely to have been abroad. Based on the advice from 111 to carry on as normal for DS, WIBU to just crack on as I would if this wasn't happening?

The advice is to self isolate with coronavirus symptoms - new Continuous cough or fever. You don’t have those. Just carry on.

BeeFarseer · 15/03/2020 16:10

You don't have a cough or a temperature, so you're fine at the moment.

If you do develop a cough or temperature, then you need to self-isolate.

That's what I thought, but I have a few friends who were aghast that I was even considering it. Mind you, they have also stockpiled (think overflowing cupboards). Hmm

I woke up with a very stuffy nose and headache yesterday. I'm not self isolating. No fever no cough. I feel a bit meh but managed an 8km walk through the woods today so cant be that ill.

Mind you, on the other hand I could do with painting the hall... BlushSmile

The chances are you will need to self isolate at some point so don’t go too early!

I am confused about this because according to government advice at the moment it's just fever and/or cough that mean isolation, but I think that is part of their plan to only ask for initially minor changes from people to improve compliance. I don't think it means that people with other symptoms won't be risk. Like household members, of course they are a risk but they are not isolating them yet just for compliance reasons.

I was at a private hospital recently that has decided to expand the government policy. They asked everyone entering to tick four boxes, if you ticked any you could not proceed into the building. They were...

  1. Fever
  2. Cough
  3. Runny nose
  4. Any flu like symptoms

I think that is a truer list from a medical point of view, the govt guidelines are influenced by behavioural science and expectations of what people will agree to and when.

i plan to look up my work policy when i go back to work

My two have constant runny noses - I think most parents would have to constantly self isolate for the common cold. Unless you get fever or a cough then no, I wouldn't.

GOODCAT · 15/03/2020 16:50

I have a cold. I don't have any symptoms that mean I should self isolate. I don't have any other illnesses that makes me high risk.

I will carry on as normal including going to work. I do follow advice about hand washing that applies to everyone.

Blastandbollocks · 15/03/2020 19:04

Oh yes, definitely hand washing - my hands are cracking gently, so need to invest in a good handcream.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Some people infected with the virus have no symptoms. When the virus does cause symptoms, common ones include low-grade fever, body aches, coughing, nasal congestion, runny nose, and sore throat. However, COVID-19 can occasionally cause more severe symptoms like high fever, severe cough, and shortness of breath,

Inkpaperstars · 15/03/2020 22:37

The WHO says “the most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness, and dry cough. Some patients may have aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea. These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually.”

Blastandbollocks · 16/03/2020 05:50

Well, I was bad and phoned 111 to query. Blush
and they said I was fine to work. However, I have woken up with no symptoms at all. No nose, no temp, no nothing. Still, glad I phoned. It may be overkill but they said they'd rather people checked if they were unsure.
