Would you put your house on the market next week

Been planning things for a while and just about ready to go on the market.....and now this.....

Would we be mad to put our house on the market next week?

Please do it. We have to keep as much as possible as normal as possible. I can’t even think why it would be ‘mad’ to do it. What’s the worst that can happen? You won’t get many viewings?

Finfintytint · 15/03/2020 16:06

I would if you need to but be aware that things might take a lot longer than normal. We’re mid way through selling our house and things have stalled. Everyone is focussed on the news.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 15/03/2020 16:08

Not mad but just expect it all to take so much longer. First Brexit, now this.

AgnesNaismith · 15/03/2020 16:10

I’m actively looking for houses - so please do! All estate agents I’ve seen have said it’s extremely busy right now (probably a line - I’m quite gullible).

lucymaudmonty · 15/03/2020 16:10

But what if the market crashes after we buy our new house?

I know it's not life and death, just a worry. I've not seen any discussion of what effect this will likely have on property markets.

OP posts:
KonTikki · 15/03/2020 16:12

I'm not sure that I would want complete strangers traipsing round my house at a time like this.
But obviously depends on how vital it is for a house move ....

Finfintytint · 15/03/2020 16:12

If the market crashes and you don’t need to sell for a number of years then there won’t be any issues.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 15/03/2020 16:12

Hmm have to say I wouldn’t. What are the reasons for moving? Do you need to for work, schools etc?

lucymaudmonty · 15/03/2020 16:14

Yes, schools. Ds in y4 and will need to apply for secondary soon-ish

OP posts:
GrumpyHoonMain · 15/03/2020 16:16

If you’re not at risk and don’t plan to put vulnerable people (eg grandparents etc) at risk then go for it.

SRK16 · 15/03/2020 16:18

I think we will still put our house up soon.

Exochord · 15/03/2020 16:19

I’ve cancelled my new carpet because I don’t want the carpet fitter in my house in case he’s infected. And you’re going to let dozens of randoms traipse round touching things?

Bigoldwimp · 15/03/2020 16:20

Same here. And wondering like you: I think we will. If we don’t get any offers we don’t need to move yet

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 15/03/2020 16:22

If you want to move for schools then make sure your next home is one you’d happily stay in. I don’t think the market will crash but who knows, we are very overdue a recession, maybe this is the catalyst. If it crashes then I’d have hope to have moved.

Conversely, currently I’m not sure how many of the general public have an appetite for house moving. Also do you want strangers traipsing round your home touching everything?

Putting your house on the market and keeping it viewer ready is tiring.

Changedmyname84 · 15/03/2020 16:30

I had a very patronising chat with an estate agent yesterday who kept saying ‘oh if you want to look at a house like ‘this’ one’ (basically a humongous doer upper) ‘then oh my lovely you really must have your house on the market lovely’ I said to my husband If she had called me ‘lovely’ one more time I would I have put the phone down on her - I said ‘I know what to do thank you just let
Me know when you’re taking viewings’ I’ve met another agent who I will use to sell our house who has buyers waiting ... so I know I’m ok but we are in an area of incredibly higher demand but means the next step up is high demand too! We are thinking to leave stuff put it on hold because of the economy and don’t want to be without work and tied into a massive new mortgage

Maryann1975 · 15/03/2020 16:34

@ThroughThickAndThin01 how often are we expected to have a recession? I thought the last one was about 2008, that wasn’t that long ago. Do we normally have them more often than that?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 15/03/2020 16:41

Economic cycles bring about a recession every 7/8 years approx (although can be mild) so we are on about year 10 of a 7 year cycle, so yes, overdue.

Following the credit crunch because it wasn’t allowed to run its course and was propped up by governments, not jus here (massively dropping interest rates, quantitative easing etc), there is a theory that with the next recession there isn’t much ammunition in the governments tanks to ease things.

I’m by no means an economist, just find it interesting.

Ypsilanti · 15/03/2020 16:45

I would. But I’ve just had an offer accepted on a house (currently renting) and am worried this will slow everything down (or worse, the vendor will pull out). I want to move ASAP irrespective of Coronavirus and a potential recession; I’m sure I can’t be the only one.

AgnesNaismith · 15/03/2020 17:34

I’ve also heard this....although the EU & $ will be hit much harder than the £
