Will closed borders affect food supply?

Just that really. Or is it really just stopping general travel?

That's what I was wondering.
The tomatos, broccoli and courgettes i bought at tesco this morning come from spain.
Are pickers and packers still working on the farms or is it all rotting in the poly tunnels with no one to pick it?

Meckity1 · 15/03/2020 15:27

Can farmers afford not to work? I mean, a lot of them don't have much slack.

I don’t know about the UK but over here we have been told that freight and cargo is exempt. It’s just people that the borders are closed to.

I just checked on the BBC about Germany, and freight is carrying on there as normal. I suppose the last thing people need is more panic. I just wondered.

As has been said freight has exemptions. The real issue is whether there are personnel in that country to pick and pack the food, and whether they will prioritise keeping it in the country. I imagine there will be food available, just maybe not preferred brands or fresh foods. The local greengrocer here said that they had plenty growing locally, but not sure it will be enough to meet demand.

I searched to see if anyone else was wondering this and found this thread. I’m uneasy as my quick google research suggests we only grow 50% of our food and an article in the Guardian recently suggested some countries are stopping exports of rice and wheat to feed their own people first .

My small effort is to plant veg and more than we need to help others , but I feel very unsettled as this is a fairly unprecedented crisis in an era where less food is local?
