Any plan needs to account for the fact that people are inherently selfish

I keep seeing people raging about how selfish people who won't follow the rules are but isn't that why "the plan" can't be to lock everything down for an indefinite period? It needs to be more achievable.
We know the public, as a body, is selfish.
People move house to get the best schools for their DC.
Voters will not vote for increased taxation to improve services.
People won't give up their cars/holidays/consumerism to protect the environment.
People buy too many loo rolls when scared of shortages.
There's an endless list. Some of these will be more important to some individuals than others and of course most people take steps not to be completely selfish, but human nature is selfish.
Even during the Blitz FGS looting was rife and there was a huge black market. I'm sure there were random acts of kindness and people took care of friends and neighbours to whom they had an emotional connection, but as a body "people" behaved terribly to make their own lives a bit more tolerable than others'
So we know humans will behave selfishly. There's no point having a plan that locks us down for months if we know "selfish" people won't comply, whether that's because they want to earn a living or walk the dog.
You might believe a total lockdown now is the best way to protect everyone but if it's not possible, government need to come up with something else. Perhaps delaying so that lockdown can be for a very short time, or maybe they do need to wait until it's so bad people will be so scared they will comply.
Yes, I know, China, but the British and Chinese public are not the same and neither are the methods available to keep them in line.

Yep. It's interesting that people are holding China up as an example and claiming all sorts of things like that all sick people got treatment. They didn't. And normal life in China is fine, as long as you don't have the wrong opinions and get sent away for "re-education". Or have the wrong religion. Or want any rights.

If the country goes into lockdown too early it will go on for months. No way will people behave (looting, breaking into shops, empty offices etc), and there isn't enough police to go around. The longer the lockdown, the more frustrated and silly people's behaviour will be.

I know someone who has a very high chance of dying if he gets it. Been told he will be taken straight to hospital if he does. He is in his 50’s. Also has loads of food indoors. But today him and his wife thought it was a good idea to go to a packed supermarket for an hour to get out of the house.
Why are people so stupid and selfish.
Will add his hand hygiene isn’t as good as it should be either. I really just don’t get it.

TBF coconade, so far, there's been no requirement/expectation for him to do anything else.
