To want to catch coronavirus and get it over and done with? Young fit and healthy afaik

Just thinking that most of us will catch it sooner or later, I’m unlikely to get serious symptoms and can be ready for self isolation. Then once I’ve had it I can get back to being out and about without worry and without having to take a lot of extra precautions to protect myself (as we’re currently being advised).

OP posts:
Sufferingjaysus · 15/03/2020 13:33

Oh ffs

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 15/03/2020 13:33

I’m not 100% on this but I don’t think it’s like chickenpox where it’s a one bout and done kinda deal.

I’m pretty sure you can be reinfected.

Thescrewinthetuna · 15/03/2020 13:33

I see your point and I do think if there is a ‘good’ time to get it then it’s now before shit really hits the fan. However, there is no guarantee catching it will give you immunity anyway, especially if it mutates.

SoupDragon · 15/03/2020 13:33

I have asked MNHQ to move this to the Coronavirus topic for you. People will be along shortly shout at you...

I see where you are coming from but no one knows if you'll g t immunity from it yet.

TabbyMumz · 15/03/2020 13:35

No, you can get it twice

dameofdilemma · 15/03/2020 13:36

Ideally I'd like to catch it and recover before dp gets it so one of us can always look after dd.
Would also like to be able to support MiL who is likely to be in lonely isolation.

So I'll still commuting, working and sending dd to school until/unless advice is otherwise.

We do need as many healthy people as possible to build up immunity as quickly as possible and to be able to support the most vulnerable.

Jeleste · 15/03/2020 13:38

You can catch it more than once, so you wouldnt be over and done with it.

GrumpyHoonMain · 15/03/2020 13:38

The problem for younger people starts when you catch several things at once. Pretty sure at least some of the healthy people in ICU in other countries have Covid-19 with flu or a chest infection. Your best bet is to delay infection until the flu season is over

FATEdestiny · 15/03/2020 13:39

I've been ill since Monday. Really ill, not just a cold. Today is the first day I've felt better than the previous day so I am hopeful that by the middle of next week I'll be fully on the mend.

However, I have no certainty that what I've had is Coronovirus. I've not been tested and my symptoms are just like any other winter respiratory virus.

My fear is I'll get all confident that I'm safe when I'm better next week, then find out that what I've got now is flu and so get knocked out again with Coronovirus.

Derbygerbil · 15/03/2020 13:40

No, you can get it twice

If that’s the case the Government’s strategy is screwed! It probably like most viruses... you become immune in most cases.

Somanysocks · 15/03/2020 13:40

I think it can mutate.

Derbygerbil · 15/03/2020 13:42

I agree with your OP. If most of us do need to get this thing, far better to get it now before the NHS implodes, then if you do have complications, you stand a much better chance of good treatment.

Derbygerbil · 15/03/2020 13:43

I think it can mutate.

All viruses can and will mutate, but not necessarily to something more dangerous.

Foobydoo · 15/03/2020 13:43

There is no evidence that you are immune after catching it.
It is likely it will mutate.
There are reports of around 30% of survivors being left with serious life limiting lung disease such as pulmonary fibrosis which is terrifying.

All viruses, in fact all DNA/RNA mutates. That doesn't necessarily mean much. This one is already known to mutate much more slowly than flu for example so I dont think its known yet whether you can get it more than once in one season, even flu is hard to get twice in one year. I too think its probably better to get it sooner rather than later, if you dont have underlying health conditions. Its more likely youd get it now and then again next winter I think when, hopefully, there will be a vaccine widely available.

SageRosemary · 15/03/2020 13:53

I am surprised that a person with perfect grammar and spelling could postulate such an idiotic theory.

You could infect your loved ones and my loved ones without being symptomatic yourself. You could be one of the 20% of the people who contract the virus and will need intensive care, or a ventilator, hopefully the doctors would recognise your foolish actions and refuse you treatment but I wouldn't count on it. You could already be infected and not know it. You have a duty of care to all the citizens of the world.

Practice social isolating and wash your hands thoroughly or you will have blood on your hands and a guilty conscience for all the days of your life.

I’m a nurse and thinking this too, I’m sure I’m going to be exposed soon. It seems better to get it now before being super exposed.

BananaBang · 15/03/2020 13:56

Can you post this stuff in the correct topic? I'll report your thread to get it moved

SoupDragon · 15/03/2020 13:57

I'll report your thread to get it moved

Don't bother. It is in the right topic.

DameSylvieKrin · 15/03/2020 14:00

There are already reports of several patients getting it again after testing clear. So not the brightest idea.

GenderApostate19 · 15/03/2020 14:02

I would love to know if a corona virus leaves any kind of ‘biological marker’ , for want of a better term so if you HAVE been infected and got over it, would a future test pick it up?

Stroller15 · 15/03/2020 14:02

I don't think it's as idiotic as people make the suggestion out to be. I see no problem with it. There is no evidence that you can catch it twice. I'd much rather have it now too and get it over with, to help people when it gets really bad and flatten the curve everyone is worried about. And yes, I work in health care too.

lostinthoughts · 15/03/2020 14:14

Why are a good proportion of Mumsnetters such vigilante, dramatic arseholes who take great pleasure in mocking others for their views. I'm sure the OP doesn't mock those in social isolation or who stock pile so why do the same to them.

I think it's a reasonable view, I am frontline NHS staff and agree that getting it whilst fit and healthy is a good time to build immunity. OP said nothing about putting others at risk, and if all advice was followed it would put no one else but themselves at risk. At times like these it would be nice if we supported other human beings rather than destroying them and buying all the bog roll.
