Confused about keeping child off with cough.

DS has developed a bad cough over the weekend so l will keep him off school for 7 days. But what about his sister? Should I keep her off as well? DD is worried no one will play with her if they hear her brother is off with cough. And what happens after 7 days? If still coughing do I still keep him off? Advice says we are to keep 2 meters away from him but this is not really practical! So confused!

I'm going to watch this thread with interest. My DD is getting a cough currently but it's the usual one she gets after a runny nose as far as I can see. Not a dry cough. No temperature. No idea what to do for the best tomorrow for back to school.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 15/03/2020 12:07

Yes it’s a mine field. My 2.5yr old is coughing at night- like she does at this time of yr and waking with a blocked nose. I would say she’s fine to go into nursery.

edenhills · 15/03/2020 12:07

I'm pretty sure this is normal cough/cold too and not coronavirus but im trying to follow the guidelines just in case.

Keep 2 metres away??? That's laughable, how can you possibly do that?? Are you supposed to throw toast through his bedroom door at him or something?

I'd keep them both off honestly.

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 15/03/2020 12:08

In 7 days I imagine the advice will be different, but as things stand, after 7 days they believe you're no longer contagious anyway.

HoneyBee03 · 15/03/2020 12:08

I'm confused too. My 1 year old was up all night coughing, but he's not been coughing at all in the day. I'm not sure if its something to be concerned about and it seems to be a regular cold.

BathshebasBane · 15/03/2020 12:10

It doesn't matter if she does this every time of year the guidance is any cough or temp over 37.8 Confused self isolate

I'm not really sure why it's so hard for people to comprehend?! No one is being tested for COVID so you cant ever be 100% sure what you or your children have isn't it so just follow the guidelines and help the situation you keeping them home

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 15/03/2020 12:11

The 7 days off is a joke unless a fever. Especially toddlers who cough and have snotty noses non stop in winter- if it was just 7 days fine but another sniffle will come along in a fortnight and that’s another week at home.

Sunshine1239 · 15/03/2020 12:12

It’s not just any cough

It’s a new persistent cough not a come and go cough

edenhills · 15/03/2020 12:13

I think the schools will send home any child with even a slight cough tomorrow, but DD is completely fine?

Any cough (unless constant part of a chronic ongoing disease) means isolation for seven days. Beyond that if symptoms persist, call 111 for advice on how to proceed.

I agree it isn't practical to stay two metres away with young children! So I think you'd have to isolate as a household.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 15/03/2020 12:14

It’s a new persistent cough not a come and go cough so coughing more than once in the space or a couple of minutes?

edenhills · 15/03/2020 12:15

DS is not unwell, no fever. But he is coughing at least once every 5 mins, so definitely keeping him off as per the advice.

My 6 yr old ds started with a cough on Saturday and it has gone on overnight and today. I know it’s just a cold but am keeping him in for 7 days anyway as per guidance. It feels ridiculously ott but I’m doing it anyway. Dd (8) is going to school however as she doesn’t have a cough.

MrsSchrute · 15/03/2020 12:16

Current advice is that just ther person with the cough or temperature needs to self isolate, so your DD should be fine to go to school.

SunshineOutdoors · 15/03/2020 12:16

He’s not coughing every couple of minutes, more like every 15 minutes.

AlexCabot · 15/03/2020 12:17

Dh is ill with what seems very much like coronavirus but he won't be tested. I'm isolating the household and neither children will go to school next week.

Sunshine1239 · 15/03/2020 12:18

Nhs says new continuous cough

So coughing repeatedly

Not just a normal cough. I have a cough this week which happens when I go outside and goes when I come in so even though it’s new it’s not continuous so I don’t need to isolate as per advice

Inkpaperstars · 15/03/2020 12:18

Sorry just seen your last message, I think technically the current guidelines are that other household members eg, your dd, don't need to isolate. But that is based on this (crazy) idea that one household member can completely isolate from others which just doesn't work with young children. They have said that guidelines will change soon to include whole household but not yet...that isn't because it isn't needed now, it is because they think people won't comply for a long period. So safer to keep your dd off too.

Albatross123 · 15/03/2020 12:21

My dd is coughing so I have told her to stay off school for the week. The problem is she is the teacher! I think the schools are going to be struggling to stay open under the new rules.

ShootEmUpSarsaparilla · 15/03/2020 12:30

We’re in the same position. 111 advised on Friday that there’s no need to isolate the rest of the family.

edenhills · 15/03/2020 12:31

DH has just said he is not going to stay off work because DS has a cough and he works in a hospital!

Igotthemheavyboobs · 15/03/2020 12:33

Are people deliberately misreading the OP? The child with the cough is being kept off, she is asking about her other child with no cough but obviously lives with coughing child.
OP I don't know, might be best to just keep both off as I imagine the advice will be different in 7 days.

Sunshine1239 · 15/03/2020 12:44

Rule now is second child doesn’t have to stay off but that rule is expected to change next week
