DH and I have been trying to come up with some basic routines in terms of the house to reduce the chance of exposure to CV19 in case one of us picks it up outside.

So far, we've got...

  • wipe steering wheel and hand brake before and after using the car.
  • wash hands immediately after coming into house.
  • wash hands before all meals (and obvs, after loo).
  • disinfect kitchen surfaces before meal prep and after.
  • disinfect bathroom/loo every evening.
  • disinfect external door handles every evening.

Am I missing anything? What are your measures for this?

Purses and car keys need wiping

We are washing our hands a bit more than usual and as soon as we get through the door. Every so often I'm wiping high touch things e.g phones and remotes with a cloth with cleaning product on it. That's literally it - I'm doing nothing else extra at all and not a single single-use cleaning wipe in our house.

I’m wiping and spraying all internal and external door handles, all remote controls, loo flush buttons, bin lids, phones, kitchen cupboard handles. Basically all the things that get touched a lot are extra clean.

Don’t forget bank cards, sunglasses, keys

Packingsoapandwater · 15/03/2020 11:34

Car keys! Yes, that makes sense.

I don't use single use wipes. I've never really got on with them. I've been making up a cold disinfectant spray and using cloths that I then boil wash. I've also got rubbing alcohol left over from the days when our old cat had a urinary problem.

I've very nervous about passing this virus onto my parents in any way as they are our only guardians for dd in case something happens to me and DH.

We have always had a thoroughly wash your hands when straight in. I have anxiety and was also a nurse when younger so was taught how to scrub up for surgery. When DS GF and a friend came in I made them do it, they were fine with this.

We are also now changing in to a comfy clothes inside the house outfit.

One of the things with anxiety is I hardly touch anything out of the house anyway. For instance key pads and cash points I have always used the edge of another bank card and never actually touched them. Recently I have only used my contactless. I haven’t touched a door handle when out unless using a tissue for years. Use your elbow to switch lights on and off , when using hand pump for soap recently I have used my forearm wit( first use after coming in form being out.

I have prepared my bedroom to make it the best possible place to be while suffering a respiratory infection. I have pulled out the furniture and dusted and washed the areas behind. Washed the windows and curtains. Gotten some anti-allergy mattress covers and washed them ready for use. I've cleared my wardrobe of all the clothes I never wear so they are no longer just there being musty.

Cleared my bedside cabinet of everything but paracetamol, vitamins, muscle rubs, lozenges and the treats I know I normally find tempting while sick. I have a humidifier. I've bought a 24 pack of coke as it's the one thing I find easy to drink when sick. I've made a space clear for putting the kettle and some packs of cup-a-soup and crackers on, so I don't have to walk all the way to the kitchen for sustenance. I'm a single parent and when I had flu in January, I found the trip to the kitchen for food so exhausting that I had to have a lie down before I had the energy to eat it. That won't happen again.

We’re cleaning light switches, kitchen doors, drawers, banisters, remote controls, all door handles including front door, window handles, toaster handles, microwave buttons, taps etc daily with alcohol wipes though will need to move to spray and cloth by end of the month.

Also cleaning things in the fridge that are regularly handled i.e. the Brita jug.

On as and when basis cleaning keys and other small items including mobile phones.

Thanks for the tip about car steering wheel etc.

BadCatDirtyCat · 15/03/2020 11:56

If you use your phone while on public transport clean it when you get in (at the same time as washing your hands).

GreekOddess · 15/03/2020 11:59

I'm spending longer than usual washing my hands but that's it. I'm not doing anything else differently. I'm clean, my home is clean I'm not sure what else I should be doing. Keep calm and carry on is my motto!
