I'm probably being naive here, but can any step in to make the government do more, Boris Johnson is being criticised by scientists, other countries, WHO yet not much is changing.

Can anyone actually make him change his approach to corona virus and force his hand or are we just stuck with what he says goes and to just be sitting ducks?

What is it that you want done?

Rhubarbpeony · 15/03/2020 16:03

Technically the queen has the power to dissolve parliament but in reality she won’t exercise it.

To be brutally honest, if you wanted a government that was going to "do something", you would never have chosen this shower of shits in a million years. Especially as it's barely 4 months since people had a choice as to what sort of government they wanted and resoundingly chose this lot.

SerendipityJane · 15/03/2020 16:07

She doesn't - that's a fairy story that was spun to nascent republicans (like me) to shut us up in the past.

We discovered last year, the Queen can do nothing without the advice of Boris when it comes to the UKs government. She can't even choose the wallpaper. She's merely a very expensive model for some pretty serious bling. No more.

I would like Boris to act in the nations interest and at least try to slow its spread by banning large gatherings for a start. Don’t know how the way people are going about their life normally will result in flattening the curve!

Theworldisfullofgs · 15/03/2020 16:13

Like whom?

Sorry to be sarcastic, but people voted for 'independence' and Boris Johnson.

Rhubarbpeony · 15/03/2020 16:17

@SerendipityJane

Here you go: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_prerogative_in_the_United_Kingdom

As I said - can but won’t.

(Thank goodness - It would be very undemocratic)

That's your problem, right there. Why on earth would he change the habit - and entitlement - of a lifetime. It's Boris and chums first as much now as it was when he hoodwinked people by pointing at Corbyn (who this government has already outspent, by the way) and going "bwah bwah bwah".

MorrisZapp · 15/03/2020 16:19

What do you want him to be forced to do? And who would this superior enforcer be?

AnyFucker · 15/03/2020 16:20

You are being silly

DGRossetti · 15/03/2020 16:23

Rhubarbpeony

wiki cites, like patriotism - might be considered the last refuge of the scoundrel Smile. There is no (modern) precedent for the monarch to exercise Royal Prerogative without or against the advice of Government. So we can both be right and both be wrong. (Since the article is descriptive rather than definitive. There is no formal legal expression of Royal Prerogative - as the article notes ....)

It's worth reminding ourselves of the times (in particular the last time) a monarch tried to exercise their prerogative on their own initiative. It's quite well recorded.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 15/03/2020 16:24

I don’t understand why people are waiting for the govt to issue instructions if they feel so strongly the approach is incorrect. We can all choose to avoid large gatherings and isolate ourselves as much as possible if that’s what we think needs to happen.

thistimelastweek · 15/03/2020 16:26

Yup, a good old military coup wouldn't go amiss.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 15/03/2020 16:26

The government is doing fine (on this issue at least). Here's a good model that shows why: www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/world/corona-simulator/?fbclid=IwAR35xjlqPoam065jtASfbYK4C1wsEd0KcjZJ-jTFovNL99ot_RRQ_cmwm_c

Washington post -not sure I’d give that much weight.

Can’t read it as I’m not signing up for a sub but 🤷🏻‍♀️

mpsw · 15/03/2020 16:41

It'll never happen. There's no way you'd get the Navy, Army and Air Force working together like that
