Shitty attitudes

I've just seen someone on my Facebook post a meme of a cocktail glass with the caption - I'm more worried about coronavirus fucking up my holiday than I am of catching it.

Aibu to be totally pissed off with this attitude? I get that it's very disappointing to lose or have to cancel a holiday. It's looking likely that we will have to cancel one of ours and I'm gutted. But when you put the whole thing into perspective it's just a holiday. People are dying and it's going to get a lot worse. Why are people so selfish?

Resisting the urge to comment but blimey it's getting on my nerves

People are allowed a sense of humour during this, stop taking Facebook memes so seriously.

onalongsabbatical · 15/03/2020 09:59

Ok so people like that are either stupid - don't waste your own valuable energy on them, or in denial - don't waste etc, or bolstering their own mood with bravado - let them get on with it.

Cocoandclive27 · 15/03/2020 10:01

@Igotthemheavyboobs Oh I'm certainly not against humour, that's what will make this whole thing more bearable. Am particularly enjoying the alternative song choices to hand washing - saw one for wuthering heights yesterday.

But people moaning about holidays I don't really find funny. Of course they're allowed to be disappointed about cancelling one but at this stage of the game I think it's in really poor taste to be moaning about it excessively

I'm unfollowing people and businesses willy nilly on social media for stupid and idiotic posts and commentary on the whole situation. For stupid memes. Not so much. Gallows humour is very much part of my soul.

Ughmaybenot · 15/03/2020 10:03

I would say that’s clearly a joke.. it’s a meme. People are all dealing with this in their own way.

babasaclover · 15/03/2020 10:07

They are just trying to lighten the mood in a very dire situation. So life is so hard and full on all the time people will be very disappointed in missing out on a well beer break - I know I am.

Cocoandclive27 · 15/03/2020 10:09

We will most likely have to cancel a holiday too. It's very upsetting but I at this point I wouldn't be bleating about it on social media as there are people who are going to experience a lot worse from this than a cancelled holiday

OP posts:
mummyh2016 · 15/03/2020 10:11

Regardless of what's going on though you can still be disappointed when something you have been looking forward to for so long won't be going ahead. Think you're making an issue out of nothing here.

Meruem · 15/03/2020 10:15

I haven’t been on FB since this all started and people were posting the “keep calm and wash your hands thing”. I was just getting annoyed and knew I’d end up having stupid arguments over it.

FloraGreysteel · 15/03/2020 10:15

It's called gallows humour, it's a way of coping, not necessarily an indicator of someone being a dickhead. Don't judge without a lot more context.

My boyfriend and I joked about him being forced to eat my corpse to survive this morning.

Cocoandclive27 · 15/03/2020 10:24

I'm a big supporter of gallows humour but all this moaning about missing holidays and football matches and stuff like that isn't being said as a joke in the same way your boyfriend joking about eating your corpse is....I hope!! People mean it.

People genuinely are pissed off and disappointed about missing holidays which is understandable. But at a time when there are far bigger things going on I just think it shows a lack of compassion for others and a lack of understanding for a situation that's going to have much bigger implications than missing a holiday.

Of course people have every right to be upset, I'm upset that we are likely to miss our holiday. But I wouldn't be plastering it all over fb like so many other people are doing.

OP posts:
Gazelda · 15/03/2020 10:25

It's some people's way of lightening the gloom. We all cope with tough times in different ways. I'm sure it's not meant to be offensive.

And you mention that you might have to cancel one of your holidays. Maybe this is their only holiday this year, or their first holiday for 5 years. Or a 'once in a lifetime' holiday they've been saving for since 1986 and their insurance doesn't cover.

Notredamn · 15/03/2020 11:20

I'd be more pissed off about missing a holiday and the inconvenience, too. Because if catch it, it's probable it will just be like any other virus and I'll have been through worse. Rather think like that than be panicking and shaking with fear at the prospect of it!
(Nothing to do with worrying about others, of course it's worrying but that's not what the post was about).

itsgettingweird · 15/03/2020 11:23

My mum is moaning she may not get to her holiday in eurodisney.

She's high risk for CV.

It's a shit situation. People will deal with it however they like. Their own sense of humour and priorities won't be shared by everyone in their circle.

I laughed at the one about self isolating with the drink called quarantini. Others don't find it funny.

NanSlayer · 15/03/2020 11:30

I just visited the local shop and there was an old chap really angry about people shopping, was going on about how fat people didn't exist in the war and stock pilling was wrong.

I tried listening/talking to him as I think he just wanted someone to project his thoughts onto, (psychological projection is a defence mechanism in which the human ego defends itself against unconscious impulses or qualities)

He started getting nasty and personal, so I wished him a good day and left him to alone, he was too fired up.

I really feel for him as he was so angry and seemed lonely, I'm going to visit the shop same time next Sunday to see if I can connect with him and let him know someone is thinking of him, as we can all get irrational when we are fired up.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 15/03/2020 11:30

You need to chill out. It's lighthearted. If people making lighthearted quips on social media is upsetting you maybe you need to stay away from it for a while.

formerbabe · 15/03/2020 11:33

So what?

People die every day in all sorts of hideous circumstances. We are also still allowed to moan about seemingly minor things in our own life.

Let's say, I go to a restaurant and don't like the food. Would you say I shouldn't complain because some people are starving?

Cocoandclive27 · 15/03/2020 11:34

@GiveHerHellFromUs lol I wouldn't say its upsetting me. It's just not something I would personally do. I think you can tell a lot about people when things like this happen. It's upsetting to lose a holiday but in the grand scheme of people dying, people self isolating, people not being able to access health care or basic supplies, loneliness and so on....I think you could come across as a bit of an arse if your main priority and concern is cancelling a holiday.

OP posts:
formerbabe · 15/03/2020 11:36

Also if I had a holiday cancelled that would upset me more than a random person I've never met dying.

Now, I am aware that someone dying is a much worse event than a cancelled holiday but from the prism of my own life, I'm more personally upset by the cancellation of my holiday.

You might think that sounds awful but most of us are like this whether you want to admit it or not.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 15/03/2020 11:36

@Cocoandclive27 I do see your point and I share a similar view. I personally wouldn't post things like it on SM because although I know it's lighthearted, I don't find it amusing.

Id also be very conscious of the fact that, as numbers of infected people rise, someone whose family member is critically ill could read it.

goldenorbspider · 15/03/2020 11:37

I love abit of gallows humour myself. I don't have a holiday booked this year as we can't afford one. If we did have one planned I'd be disappointed.

Cocoandclive27 · 15/03/2020 11:39

@formerbabe of course, I wouldn't deny that. But this is something is affecting everyone. It may well affect you (not directly but perhaps your elderly friends or relatives) or perhaps the relatives of someone you know.

Everyone is perfectly entitled to feel how they want to feel and prioritise what they want to prioritise. People are allowed to go and panic buy 50 rolls of loo roll if they want to. And other people are entitled to have an opinion on that sort of behaviour and mentality.

OP posts:
stargirl1701 · 15/03/2020 11:39

It's gallows humour.

Cocoandclive27 · 15/03/2020 11:42

Let's say for example some big accident or attack happened that caused major disruption to a concert/football match/event. Would you not find it in pretty poor taste if people started complaining online about not being able to attend said concert/football match/event rather than concerning themselves with people who are caught up, injured or dead?

OP posts:
PeterPanGoesWrong · 15/03/2020 11:44

Ever heard the saying If I don’t laugh I’ll cry!
I think people are still allowed their own opinions, even if those opinions are ‘wrong’ in your opinion!

Lighten up a little, being grumpy isn’t going to change anything.
