Child with new cough, should I send her in?

cough101 · 15/03/2020 09:07

Child has a new cough, started as a sore throat and has developed to a continuous cough
No temp
Feels ok in themselves ( eating, playing etc)

Should I send to school?

I KNOW the NHS site says to isolate even if there's no temp, but they genuinely seem ok in themselves and have suffered coughs in the past, so not unusual

There are no confirmed cases on Covid in my city

AIBU to send them in? Would you isolate? actually isolate at this stage? It seems such an extreme measure

Thanks

🤦‍♀️

Jeezoh · 15/03/2020 09:09

Are you serious? Keep them at home for gods sake!!

MilkItTilITurnItIntoCheese · 15/03/2020 09:09

Keep her off. No question. Just in case. Don’t be selfish.

peachypetite · 15/03/2020 09:09

Reported

netstaller · 15/03/2020 09:10

Of course you don't send the child in. Your child might seem ok, but if they do have it and they pass it to another child whose family has breathing problems, they could die as I'm sure you know! YABVU and selfish

JoshArcherStoleMyTractor · 15/03/2020 09:10

It's difficult isn't it, DS has a snotty nose, cough and temperature, it's highly unlikely it's CV but should I isolate him? If so what about all the people he's had contact with in the last week including nursery do they need to too? In some ways at least with lockdown there's no grey area

TabbyMumz · 15/03/2020 09:10

You've said its s continuous cough...does that not answer your question? In case you are unsure... absolutely not. Goodness me.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 15/03/2020 09:10

Mine is the same and I'm isolating them.

Griefmonster · 15/03/2020 09:10

Keep her home. Follow the advice. It seems extreme because we are not used to extreme public health measures. Remember for most people COVID is a mild illness. And we don't need to know it is covid to take action. Just assume it is. I hope the next week goes well! Take care x

BecauseReasons · 15/03/2020 09:10

No. Keep at home FFS. Are the instructions really that difficult to understand?

Jeezoh · 15/03/2020 09:10

It’s NOT difficult, the guidance is clear - self isolate if it’s a new continuous cough.

Justgivemethehobnobs · 15/03/2020 09:11

Ohmygod, yes keep them off. What part of children only show mild symptoms do people not understand? People like you are literally going to kill people.

Randomness12 · 15/03/2020 09:11

This is literally why the guidance is there! Keep her at home. It’s not about her, she’s a child so a so-called super spreader, it’s about who she could infect IF she does have it.

Everyone has had a cough before, that’s irrelevant. Please don’t be selfish.

Divebar · 15/03/2020 09:11

This is a joke surely?

BecauseReasons · 15/03/2020 09:12

@JoshArcherStoleMyTractor

There is no grey area. Does he have a new, continuous cough or fever, regardless of other symptoms? If yes, keep him at home for a week. If no, send him in. It's not that difficult.

Number12 · 15/03/2020 09:12

er.... No!!!!

Doomed

MollyButton · 15/03/2020 09:12

No!

You do realise they are now only testing those admitted to hospital, not even those going to hospital and then sent home?
So there may well /probably are cases in your city.
And even if it is "just a cold" passing that on could be just the final straw that stops someone else's body being able to resist the Coronavirus when it comes along.

fishandsnails · 15/03/2020 09:12

You have no idea if it's the Coronavirus or not, it's not your call to make, the advice is clear, I can't believe people are so selfish. My 2 year old has a temperature, it might be the virus it might not but she isn't leaving the house for 7 days. It's not a difficult concept to understand.

Purplestorm83 · 15/03/2020 09:13

The school will probably send her home anyway if you send her in. Also teachers really want to avoid catching coughs etc at the moment as they will then have to do the responsible thing and self-isolate, if enough teachers have to do that the schools will have to close.

Griefmonster · 15/03/2020 09:13

@JoshArcherStoleMyTractor

There is no grey area in UK public health advice either - new cough (not one cough but coughing throughout the day) OR a fever then isolate for at least 7 days.

Butterwhy · 15/03/2020 09:14

I'm not sure what people are finding so hard to grasp.

cough101 · 15/03/2020 09:14

Alright steady on with the insults!

A few days ago I would be thinking the same as you " just follow the guileless" but then it happened and they feel fine and it has put me in a unexpected dilemma, because logically and statistically they are ok

Thanks for the replies

🤦🏻‍♀️ This is why we need a proper lockdown, so many people think the rules don't apply to them. My DD started with a cough yesterday. Even my normally incredibly sensible DH had a moment of 'we don't need to keep her off for a week do we?'. She will be off for a week and, as much as possible, confined to her own room. It's time to stop pissing about and take this seriously, the NHS is going to be in serious trouble, I would guess in less than a week.
KEEP YOUR CHILD OFF.

Randomness12 · 15/03/2020 09:16

We don’t know if they are statistically ok. They are no longer testing people who are not admitted to hospital. We only know the number of confirmed cases of those tested. The real number is likely to be in the tens of thousands now!
