That’s not the case - children can get it but they often (not always) have milder symptoms. I can’t find something from our government, but this, from the USA Centers for Disease Control and Infection, says:

“ Q: Are the symptoms of COVID-19 different in children than in adults?

A: No. The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar in children and adults. However, children with confirmed COVID-19 have generally presented with mild symptoms. Reported symptoms in children include cold-like symptoms, such as fever, runny nose, and cough. Vomiting and diarrhea have also been reported. It’s not known yet whether some children may be at higher risk for severe illness, for example, children with underlying medical conditions and special healthcare needs. There is much more to be learned about how the disease impacts children.”

Your nephew needs to self-isolate for next 7 days as per govt advice (no school, stay in house, isolate from family as best as possible given his age, own bathroom or clean after use, frequent hand washes)

Lumene · 15/03/2020 08:01

But he should be fine and if Coronavirus should be mild. It’s about impact on others who may be more affected.

Lardlizard · 15/03/2020 08:32

Would you say it’s more likely to be a cough or cold than this virus
Apparently he only started coughing on Saturday no fever

The guidelines are clear. A fever and/or a new continuous cough = isolation for 7 days.

Cornettoninja · 15/03/2020 08:41

Yes children present with symptoms but they will generally present more like a normal fluey virus and they don’t seem to succumb to pneumonia with this virus.

Please don't take medical advice from the internet, literally no one can answer that question.

The way to keep everyone safe is to follow the NHS advice, seriously this is what you need o do.

Redwinestillfine · 15/03/2020 08:47

Is your DH a Coronavirus expert?

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 15/03/2020 08:50

Follow the advice. Cough = isolate. Don’t allow him to put the vulnerable at risk.

Lucked · 15/03/2020 08:54

There is no way to know what virus is causing him to cough. Everyone needs to have an abundance of caution at the moment. They should assume he is infected and do everything they can to minimise the risk of it being passed on.

Bluntness100 · 15/03/2020 08:58

Does it matter if it’s more likely one or the other? He has symptoms so needs to be isolated. It’s not a game of playing the odds.

HomerSimpsonSmilingPolitely · 15/03/2020 09:06

It affects everyone differently. Most children are asymptomatic or only have mild symptoms, but there are some that have become critically ill.

It doesn't matter. The guidelines are self isolation for 7 days.

Wigeon · 15/03/2020 13:05

New cough = gotta isolate him. Doesn’t matter he hasn’t got a temperature - having either, or both, means self isolating.

Lardlizard · 15/03/2020 13:24

Ok, I’ll pass the info on

nonicknameseemsavailable · 15/03/2020 13:51

I say definitely isolate.
