DS is sick and need advice

I don't know what to do.

Last night we took our temperature as we weren't feeling great and we all had a temperature.

In the night my two year old came in our room screaming and inconsolable. He has had night terrors in the past but my husband was worried he might be screaming due to pain, so we gave him Calpol and after a while he settled and went back to sleep. (With his night terrors they usually can't be fixed with Calpol so I assume it must have been pain).

This morning he woke me up by standing over me coughing. He has been coughing all morning. The NHS website was asking if we had been in contact with someone who was sick but I don't know.

I do know a man at nursery last week said to his child 'mummy is back tonight and probably bringing coronavirus with her'. I assumed was just a weird dad joke but now I'm wondering if he could have caught it from nursery this week?

He doesn't have shortness of breath just a cough and his temperature was 37.8 this morning which is orange on the thermometer not red.

Honestly no idea what to do. I do think that I should keep my son at home but am I meant to go to work? My mum is meant to be coming to see me tomorrow, should I be cancelling her?

(I have had a cold for weeks, no cough just temperature and constantly running nose. Don't know if that's important)

Advice is crystal clear. A new persistent cough or a temp of 37.8 or more.

Of course keep him off.

NellyGrace · 15/03/2020 07:42

Government advice at the moment is just to isolate the coughing person for 1 week.

I would isolate everyone in your family and not see your mum for 2 weeks.

That’s what other countries would also tell you to do.

30not13 · 15/03/2020 07:43

And I would assume that advice will very soon change to all isolating in a household.

I know what I so have done in normal circumstances if it was my child when he was young , let alone now .

JemimaPuddleCat · 15/03/2020 07:46

You say you all have a temperature. What is it? If it's over 37.8° then you need to isolate also.

The advice is a temperature of over 37.8° OR a persistent cough. Also advised not to contact 111 or your GP, unless desperately needing help.

Ciwirocks · 15/03/2020 07:46

If you all had a temperature you all need to isolate. When people are following the government advice to the letter (only the symptomatic person to isolate) you need to remember that the government want this to spread to a degree. The safest thing to do is all to isolate and stay away from your mother.

Ginnesaisquoi · 15/03/2020 07:47

We are in the same position with our 4 year old. Temperature running at about 38.5 and a bad dry cough.

I don’t think we can be taking any chances and will isolate, although worried about the consequences this will have with work (I’m a nurse).

EsmeeMerlin · 15/03/2020 07:47

Yes you will now need to be off work and your 2 year old will need to be isolated for a week. I would also cancel the visit from your mum as I would if the kids got ill for any reason.

Your son will be fine in a week or so, steam can help with coughs and I always found propping up one side of the bed mattress can also help so they are not sleeping flat.

WaterSheep · 15/03/2020 07:47

we all had a temperature.

Then you all need to self isolate.

willdoitinaminute · 15/03/2020 07:48

Isolate, isolate, isolate. The information is very clear. Regular (recommended) dose of Calpol whether he needs it or not to control fever and hopefully he will be fine in a couple of days. If his temp goes into red and is not responding to calpol contact nhs111. Do not go to A&E unless instructed. And don’t allow visitors for 7 days.
Oh and don’t use Ibuprofen.

BackInTime · 15/03/2020 07:48

Isolate and stay away from your mother, also advise your workplace and nursery so they can make their own decisions

Queenfreak · 15/03/2020 07:48

It's very simple. You have all got/had a temperature, so you are now all isolating for 7 days. No contact with others.

MondieBee · 15/03/2020 07:50

If you've all had a temperature, you all need to self isolate. How can anyone be unsure what to do in this situation. Especially a nurse?! We are fucked.

MondieBee · 15/03/2020 07:52

Sorry, another poster is a nurse. But still. The advice is so clear this is almost unbelievable.

Mumofone1902 · 15/03/2020 07:58

Okay will message everyone now. Me and my husband were in the 39s temperature wise. It's just hard as when you feel like it's a cold it's like you are taking advantage of a virus by staying home?

My husbands parents are alot older than mine so we already agreed becuase my son goes playgroup and we both work in busy places we weren't going to see them for a while.

Forgot to mention, at my work everyone in my section has a cold and two have a cough which is why I was wondering whether it was as serious as well- Saying this 2 people at work have put on Facebook just now they will be self isolating for a week.

I see a lot of posters saying cough OR high temperature requires self isolation. I have just called 111 on the advise of my midwife because I am pregnant and have a temperature of 39c and a mild cough (which is just a hangover from a recent cold). They told me no need to isolate at all I can go about my normal business!

Selfsettling3 · 15/03/2020 08:01

It doesn’t matter what you think you have. You know you have a temp above 37.8 so you need to self isolate unless you want to cause other people to die.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 15/03/2020 08:04

Yes, the advice is very clear. Cough or temperature above 37.8 = self isolate for 7 days. Hope you are all OK OP.

Normandy144 · 15/03/2020 08:04

Advice on the website is crystal clear if you have a temperature of 37.8 or above or (not and) a cough you need to self isolate for 7 days. So based on your post your whole family should be self isolating now for 7 days from the onset on symptoms.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 15/03/2020 08:07

Follow the links at the top of the page. 111 is wrong. Your midwife is also wrong. You should have followed the 111 online questionnaire which would have told you to self isolate.

WaterSheep · 15/03/2020 08:07

They told me no need to isolate at all I can go about my normal business!

Unfortunately that's incorrect. You have to self isolate if you have a cough or a temperature.

It's frustrating that 111 aren't giving the correct information, they're putting lives at risk. Sad

Skf108 · 15/03/2020 08:07

Why no ibuprofen?

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 15/03/2020 08:08

Sorry Teddy that sounded harsh to you. I didn’t mean it to. Flowers

ThisMustBeMyDream · 15/03/2020 08:09

TeddyTeddy, ring 111 back. You need to complain. They have given you wrong advice. I can hardly believe the amount of people getting this wrong 🤦.

FrankieManca · 15/03/2020 08:09

You all have a temperature so you need to isolate yourselves.

No going out, no guests.

Ask a friend to drop a shop on your doorstep if you run out of supplies and transfer ££ to their bank.
