Brexit means coronavirus vaccine will be slower to reach the UK

I wonder it this is partly why they are talking about going down the herd immunity route. It will be interesting to see in their models when they are assuming the uk will have access to a vaccine.

If Patrick Valence is talking about getting 60% of the population infected but still lowering the peak for the nhs to semi cope I assume they are thinking a vaccine will be years away.

the two vaccines I have read about are from the US and Australia - so I don’t think that the article rings true about Covid, though it may be accurate about other drugs.

There are so many research centres working on a vaccine at the moment, it’s a rush to the finish line, many of them are in the uk. One uk firm has applied for human testing that I know of, but still a vaccine will be at least a year off.

The article is not saying it will take longer becuase the vaccine comes from the EU. It recognises the vaccine comes from the US/Australia but it will take longer to get hold of becuase the UK will lack the regulatory and negotiating power of being part of the EU.

Can we all stop getting negative and upset about a vaccine which doesn’t exist yet, and won’t exist by expert advice for at least a year. Don’t we have enough to worry about?

I would imagine in this situation, if herd immunity is nowhere near to working by the time the vaccine is available, the UK would have no choice but to go down the Singapore route at least for the short term.

As much as I loathe Brexit and BJ even I don’t think he would use Brexit as an excuse not to get the best possible outcome for the country in the event of a pandemic.

I actually don’t want to hear about Brexit ever again. The EU countries are closing their borders with each other, some are preventing medical supplies being exported - free moment of goods, my arse. We’re in a shit situation as are the rest of the World. We just need to pull together and get on and deal with it without political point scoring.

More scaremongering from the press.

Also from the Guardian:

"About 35 companies and academic institutions are racing to create such a vaccine, at least four of which already have candidates they have been testing in animals. The first of these – produced by Boston-based biotech firm Moderna – will enter human trials in April."

So it is reporting claims that the UK will be at the back at the queue with the rest of the world because the EU/EMA will have first dibs (and the best price) on a vaccine and at the same time, it is reporting that an American firm is currently first in the race to actually produce a vaccine.

Not for the first time, I wish the Guardian would stop using Brexit as a handy excuse to scaremonger. Is it any wonder it has to keep pleading for readers' contributions?

I think the UK is strong in the biotech sector so we may be better off than the rest of Europe in the race to develop a vaccine. However it won’t help us in the short term because the virus is spreading too fast.
