AIBU to think the government should have handed out a carepack for each citizen?

They should have had protocol in place for a Pandemic. Could they not have supplied everybody with a mask, latex gloves, hand gel, hand wash and food vouchers for the old, people on benefits and low incomes?

They managed to give everyone a gas mask and ration book in WW2, care packs could be handed out at polling booths.

They could have made stores ration toilet rolls and pasta/rice. Basic shopping lists.
They could have given reassurance to everyone.
AIBU to think the government had enough time to get it's shit together and have a protocol in place, but they are bumbling along taking the lead from other countries.

Oh come on!!!!!

alloutoffucks · 15/03/2020 01:56

I would have settled for them talking to supermarkets about how to maintain supplies weeks ago when it was clear this might happen. It would not have been difficult to do, and supermarkets could have been told to put things in place a few weeks ago e,g. limit sale of hand sanitiser to 1 per person.
Instead the UK Government have bumbled along totally incompetently even though it was all predictable.

Fr0g · 15/03/2020 02:07

I'd rather they put resources into finding a cure or anti-virus vaccine TBH

lexiepuppy · 15/03/2020 02:28

Well I have just watched a YouTube video by Dr Berg about the corona virus and he said we should be upping our Vitamin C, Vitamin D and E, selenium and Zinc which all help to fight viruses.

Maybe the government should provide us all with a good multivitamin instead to be posted through our doors! ( I am joking or maybe it's the glue!) ........more jokes!Wink

A. Why should I have been paying for something that may never happen, for the government to stockpile things that will go out of date.

B. I’d rather put the money from A into education that people aren’t so thick they need taxpayers to pay for a shopping list for them.

C. Take some personal responsibility unless you want a hugely paternalistic state who governs the minutiae of your life.

CJsGoldfish · 15/03/2020 02:57

I was shopping today ( not panic buying) and there was an old man pushing a walker along, barely able to walk with his shopping and he went to the isle and there was no toilet paper for him (or anyone).
I literally cried
I'm surprised at the number of frail elderly people MNs seem to be running into at the supermarket.
I hope someone was able to comfort you as you cried OP

Well I have just watched a YouTube video by Dr Berg about the corona virus
🤣 🤣🤣

So it is a jokey thread??

LangSpartacusCleg · 15/03/2020 03:02

Well, add me to the list of people who thought the OP was on glue.

I don’t want a nanny state, thank you very much. I am quite happy to provide my own tissues and paracetamol - items I use regularly anyway. Do I need extras on the off chance I catch Coronavirus? No.

Care packages for everyone would cost a fortune. And your list includes things with expiry dates so basically spending money to throw it away every few years. I would prefer that money to be spent on educating people on how to look after themselves.

Personal responsibility and resilience. If you want to invoke the Blitz spirit and WW2 rationing, first consider personal responsibility and resilience. Apparently, we had those back then too.

Fuck, I miss people bitching about Brexit!

Poetryinaction · 15/03/2020 03:06

That would involve gathering people together, a bad idea. This is not like a world war. We don't need care packages.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/03/2020 03:11

They had a long time to prep for WW2 because they knew it was coming.

We have been warned for decades that we are overdue for a pandemic - look at all of the "minor" scares we've had with SARS, Ebola etc - why was nothing in place? Why was the health service deliberately underfunded? Because short-term gain has been prioritised over long term need,

1forAll74 · 15/03/2020 03:25

I am worried about the uk now, what our government,is wanting to do, but now, nobody is trusting them at all.. but i think that you have to trust them. Many people all over, have no trust in the government, but what else can you do, It is no use in going your own way with things, re this horrible virus.

You have to believe someone, and not all people.. about this world wide virus, and make up your mind, who you and trust about this,

PhilCornwall1 · 15/03/2020 03:35

Fuck, I miss people bitching about Brexit!

^This!!

I did post on a thread a couple of weeks ago that this will be the new Brexit on here.

I'm amazed at the amount of "crying" people do over this on here about others. Do you really think strangers are crying for you?

AnneJeanne · 15/03/2020 04:20

Why does the government have to provide when we can buy these things ourselves? I don’t want to live in a nanny state. We’ve known this was coming for the past 6 weeks. All but the extremely vulnerable should have been preparing as they are able.

Lefkosia · 15/03/2020 04:32

You know what could have happened? You could have posted this in the coronavirus topic and not bored the rest of us with it

Fr0g · 15/03/2020 04:37

Boris invented corona virus to divert attention from Brexit.

Obvs if he'd had some power earlier, he'd have got the emergency care packs together Grin

Spartak · 15/03/2020 04:46

I've just looked at the bottle of hand gel that I was issued at work from a delivery last week. It has an expiry date of 10/21.

Not that keen on 60 million bottles of flammable liquid being shoved into landfill every couple of years.

That cost would also fund a fair few nurses and doctors to work extra hours at times of crisis.

How about people take responsibility for themselves?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 15/03/2020 05:01

Wow, some people really dont like the government being held to account do they?

PlanDeRaccordement · 15/03/2020 05:09

Yes, let’s spend millions on stupid stuff that only makes a person “feel” better as it is no real protection against the virus instead of spending that money ramping up hospital supplies and beds for those that actually get sick from the virus. Great idea OP!

PlanDeRaccordement · 15/03/2020 05:12

Can’t compare surgical masks that provide exactly zero protection against the virus to WW gas masks that were literally the only way to survive a gas attack.

Graciebobcat · 15/03/2020 05:17

Yes, yes they should have given care packs. And they should have also waved a magic wand and made it all go away, at the same time. Hmm

Thepigeonsarecoming · 15/03/2020 05:20

A mask and gloves are one use items. Everything else you’ve mentioned they already provide in benefits to those who need it

iheartislesofwight · 15/03/2020 05:21

another thing to consider, before WWII the population was a hell of a lot smaller than it is now. also handing out at polling booths ? most people don't vote anyway or do it via postal.
nice idea op but not practical on any level.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 15/03/2020 05:23

The government should have properly invested in the NHS. You dont need a magic wand for that.

PlumsGalore · 15/03/2020 05:36

Any suggestions on what else the country should be funding and manufacturing now and sticking in a warehouse should be need it possibly in the future in quantities of this size. And then in the landfill when we don’t.

KittyJune · 15/03/2020 05:41

YaBVU to say that they’re taking their lead from other countries. They’re totally ignoring how other countries have dealt with it and are doing almost nothing!

myself2020 · 15/03/2020 05:48

You do realise that both masks and gloves are sigle use? and the masks that aren’t single use need to hard core cleaning to not become a health risk? so it would be a case of hundreds of them per person....
