Coronavirus: will booze do instead of anti-bac?

I read somewhere ordinary anti-bac won't do, it has to be alcohol-based. Can't get any, of course - but we've got alcohol, a bottle of schnapps and a bottle of Bell's whisky and a few other bits - would cleaning things with them be effective against it?

Needs to be a high level of alcohol. High percentage rum would be your best bet before you start getting into things like rubbing alcohol.

Vodka? Potcheen??

Griefmonster · 14/03/2020 23:40

Soap

Wilmalovescake · 14/03/2020 23:41

It needs to be 60-70% proof to work.

Soap, however is fucking brilliant at dismantling viruses. It basically decimates their outer lipid layer. Anything with sodium laurel sulfate in it. Wash it for at least 20 seconds to give the chemical reaction time to occur.

Then drink your gin.

Soap or fairy liquid will do

Loppy10 · 14/03/2020 23:46

You only need soap. It dissolves the lipid of the virus and disintegrates it. Alcohol gel is only for if you don't have access to handwashing facilities.

Randomschoolworker19 · 14/03/2020 23:50

This is pretty strong at 63%

As others have said though, soap is your best bet really.

What about a spray bottle with diluted Zoflora?

Spray it over your hand, rub them together and wait for them to dry

FlamedToACrisp · 15/03/2020 12:12

OK, I just looked at the bottles and they're nowhere near 60%, more like 17.5%. rats! None of us wants to drink them, we've had them sitting in the cupboard for years.
