How the hell can a single mum self isolate?!

Single mum of a 2 year old. Secondary school teacher, so I come into contact with a lot of people daily. If I get it how the hell will I self isolate? I have to look after my little girl. Can't ask grandparents, nana has severe asthma and grandad....well he gets man flu every other week and I really couldn't cope with him having Coronavirus!

I'm starting to get so anxious about this, I have asthma and my daughter is showing signs of being asthmatic....so I'm worrying constantly as we are both considered 'vulnerable'. Any other single mums or asthmatics feel the same?

What 6 year old can cook?!

DreamInLavender · 15/03/2020 09:12

Sorry Wax, thought you said he could ShockGrin

Just isolate with him, that’s what I’ll do if my son or I get any symptoms. Not fun, but necessary.

It would be sensible for people who have already had it and are now immune to offer support to single parents - shopping for them, doing some basic house work etc. It would help if UK stepped up like other countries and actually tested people so we could get a clear picture of the spread of it and knew who was in the clear.

AnotherMurkyDay · 15/03/2020 09:39

@ellanwood

We don't know whether people who've had it will be immune or will get a mutation if re exposed though. It's not a virus we know the pattern of, like chicken pox. That does make it even more important that we should be testing people ASAP though

Lone parent too, DH died a few years ago. I’ve been thinking through what our schedule could be if I’m trying to do a combination of home working and home schooling which seems to be getting more and more likely. I have a big freezer as I usually batch cook so not worried about supplies at the moment anyway.

I send a friendly elbow bump to all you fellow lone parents 🤣

If you get it (hope not) you might need to self isolate with the 2 year old and what about asking the drug addict father's parents or siblings? They might be more responsible and able to help.

Also in theory if a parent is close to death at home they would need to call social services and have children taken into care I suppose. As in all emergencies hard choices are going to be made - I was thinking about how during WWII they directed German planes to bomb near my mother's village to pretend it was the near by big cities to spare the big cities! They had lights or something or glass to suggest to the Germans they had reached the City when they had not. Then there were also children sent away for years to strangers in places like the lake district to keep them physically safe. Not easy for anyone.

What sick pay do teachers get? Is it £95 a week statutory sick pay like most employees or is it more?

D4rwin · 15/03/2020 09:52

I'm already isolated for a cough. With children as there's no choice. I'm worried about what will happen if I get too ill to cook etc as we don't have many family and they're so far away etc. Husband has been away for work for one week and has gone straight to his holiday instead of coming home. The freezer is ok now but I'm concerned how long we will have to do this for.

Like you I'm Single mum and secondary teacher and I have a lung condition and asthma, so in an at risk group. I have two one in secondary and one in primary. We've stocked up ( well we always have extra in just incase)
No family close by and zero contact from other sperm donor parent.
We're just taking the usual precautions in school extra hand washing, but like you say we come into contact with about 400+kids a day. I've told my dc (13 and9) that it will be the same as when I've had flu...everyone will have to pitch in. We always have meals in the freezer so they can always defrost something.
If I think about it too much I'll start to panic, but it can't be any worse than the flu I had in November/December which nearly killed me off!

DaisyDoo09 · 15/03/2020 10:06

Ive been getting extra bits of groceries the last week or so so im not to worried about that.

I work in a nursing home obviously that will be staying open (no visitors allowed though) dc dad is no longer in the picture, my dm has health issues. I haven't a clue what i could do if we went into lockdown .

My boss has no children so he doesn't get it and isn't very understanding. It would be a case of loosing my job that i love i guess.

DaisyDoo09 · 15/03/2020 10:09

I know everyones health is most important but i cant help thinking of the poor residents if staff cant go into work.

TwinkleMerrick · 15/03/2020 11:57

@megletthesecond we can always chat on here, not the same as face time face but good to have something rather than nothing.

I've just braved Tesco's.....it was like Xmas eve. I didn't need a lot so in and out quick. Glad that's over!

I managed to get some lemsip so that's positive, as I rely on that stuff when I have a bad cold.

I guess we are very likely to get it, so best just to prepare. I've asked my folks to bring their swing and toys round so I have plenty to keep DD entertained. Also have Netflix to keep me sane.

Anyone recommend some good box sets?

I am a lone parent to 4. No father involvement and no family help. We will just have to get by, what other hope is there.
