What time do supermarkets restock?

Hi all Smile

Could anyone please tell me what time supermarkets tend to restock (assuming it's a one rule fits all!)? Is it usually at night? Are they still restocking items like surface cleanser? Or are certain things permanently out of stock?

Thanks Glitterball

They do restock during the night. However that's not a guarantee that you will get what you need because it may not be on the delivery lorry. What is it you are looking for?

Depends on the store

From an ex supermarket manager: it's not that straightforward.

  1. Most do not have big storage areas, they will be replenishing from what they have all day, every day.
  2. Many get deliveries overnight, yes, and have teams in to empty those lorries and put the stock in the shelf. HOWEVER...
  3. What arrives depends on what that company's distribution centre has available to send to them.
  4. Which depends on what the suppliers have available to send to the distribution centre.
  5. Which depends on the manufacturers have been able to produce (dependent on the raw materials available... ...and so on...)

Not to mention that many large supermarkets employ 150+, mainly part time staff, many of whom are students (high risk of being infected elsewhere) or close to retirement (sone with underlying health conditions). I'd be worried about about HOW they are going to achieve restocking, not when.

My advice - go to several small, local shops instead, and meal plan using less popular ingredients. And if you do go to a supermarket, buy fresh vegetables that you can cook & freeze, or their wastage is going to be horrendous.

Have you tried the discount stores like B&M, Poundland, Poundstretcher, Home Bargains for cleaning stuff?
Where I live the biggest shop of the industrial estate is looking a bit bare in places but the discount stores aren't so bad and sell a surprising selection of food. I've been finding it increasingly hard to get flour and bread mix but found both at those sort of stores today.

Apparently today my local large Tesco and Home Bargains were emptied. I went to Farmfoods, a smaller Asda, the little Tesco round the corner and the local homeware shop and got everything I needed. Farmfoods didn't have the 12pack of baked beans but I could have got some single cans. Tesco had pasta and FF had 3kg bags of the stuff.

So shopping locally and little and often is probably the best at the moment.
