France on lockdown from tonight

drippingwet · 14/03/2020 19:42

Daily Fail just flashed up with the announcement that France is going into lockdown tonight with all non-essential public locations to close.
Anyway, DP has been working in France for a couple of weeks and is due to drive home on Monday. What are the chances he will actually get out?

30,000 stuck in the Alps alone (according to the DM...)

mamansnet · 16/03/2020 09:14

I live in France and the borders are open. Not heard anything about them closing - even the Italian border is still open. French DH reckons that's because Macron "wants to lead a European réponse". Germany has closed their borders with us but AFAIK there are no problems getting anywhere else.

That said: the Journal de Dimanche newspaper is saying the wider Paris area (Île de France) and Grand Est région in the east will be on total lockdown from Wednesday. No other sources to confirm this yet. Bear in mind this is the same paper who said that the elections would be postponed and they weren't.

If anyone has family in France and needs info, feel free to tag me on here.

Eek1 Parents due from France for Sisters wedding in just over a fortnight...

Alicay · 16/03/2020 09:23

People with relatives in ski resorts, I hear that lots of people are lift sharing to the airport & arranging things via the resort Facebook page.

Sparrowlegs248 · 16/03/2020 09:55

@Aurignacian my parents could stay thee, they're in their own house, retired. I think it would be far easier for them to self isolate there.

Alicay · 16/03/2020 10:15

Macron doing an address tonight. There is an expectation that there will be a full lockdown (that’s speculation obviously, not gospel)

Frenchw1fe · 16/03/2020 10:23

@lilmishap your parents need to get to the UK now if they want to be sure of attending the wedding.
My dd is getting married in June and we live in France. If her wedding goes ahead we are definitely planning on getting back earlier than we previously thought.

Aurignacian · 16/03/2020 10:40

The Saturday timing was awful but I suppose things are changing so quickly.

Glad flights for our young people are all arranged. My son can’t get to our city but I can go and pick him up from one not too far away.

Nottalotta I think your parents might be best staying where they are. What are they thinking of doing?

Sparrowlegs248 · 16/03/2020 19:20

They're really not sure at the moment. I did just speak to mum though and she said she'd go crazy stuck in the UK house for 4 months, it's much more populated area, much smaller outside than the French place.

Aurignacian · 16/03/2020 19:32

How does the Macron announcement affect things? Will people still be able to fly out?

Sparrowlegs248 · 16/03/2020 19:39

I've not seen it. I'm self isolating with a 3 and 4 yr old and things have been rather hectic!

Booboostwo · 16/03/2020 19:47

EU borders to close to all non essential travel. I expect they will allow people to leave as that doesn't affect the country they are leaving from, but anyone wishing to travel should do so asap as the options will be drastically reduced.

France on lock down as of midday tomorrow. I am in France and it's a relief that the government is acting decisively.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 16/03/2020 19:59

Sending the non-nationals home must surely be the right thing to do? Why would France have to cope with loads of 'stuck' tourists, workers etc - France has enough of a burden on it's own healthcare. Ditto Spain.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 16/03/2020 20:10

DD1 just been told lift arrange for weds from France to Geneva cant happen as he has been told he wont be allowed back into France. FUCK

Aurignacian · 16/03/2020 20:21

You poor thing Notta

Oh no yolo! Does she have plan b? Could she get the train to Geneva? I can’t get hold of DS as they’re having a staff party tonight

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 16/03/2020 21:22

Dont know aurignacian... just want her home Sad glad to hear your DS is partying though!

Aurignacian · 16/03/2020 23:07

Well he’s young. Know how you feel, I really want him home too

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 17/03/2020 11:44

Does anyone know the advice for those returning from France?

Is it self-isolation for 14 days? DD1 says she has had all the symptoms, but a while ago. DH is immunosuppressed.

I'll go and pick her up from the airport and drive home with the windows open, but I cnnot stay in my room for 14 days as the house/animals/everything would grind to a standstill. Help!

Aurignacian · 17/03/2020 12:25

I don’t know? I’ve been looking this morning but can’t see anything

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 17/03/2020 12:32

"if you cannot move vulnerable people out of your home, stay away from them as much as possible" this is what the gov.uk page says. But that's about it. We are very lucky, we could realistically do this without sending her to her room (!) for a fortnight...

usuallydormant · 17/03/2020 12:37

I live in the Alps. The border with Switzerland, which you have to pass to get to GVA airport is restricted to people with work permits, Swiss residents but I assume they'll let people with boarding passes over. Only people with boarding passes are allowed in the airport.

The UK is still being treated as part of the EU in terms of allowing citizens travel. Only external citizens are not allowed in.

You can check the flights taking from from Geneva on their website: flights to the UK are still going

www.gva.ch/en/Site/Passagers/Message-important

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 17/03/2020 12:39

thank you so much usuallydormant, I'll tell her to download her boarding pass.
