To be worried I may lose my job

Whitegrenache · 14/03/2020 19:32

I work in the pharmaceutical industry and obviously and quite rightly all reps have been told to not go to hospitals and surgery's

If this continues then they will be all out of jobs...

I am in a supportive role so also will
Be at risk

This is causing me some mild anxiety and I'm more worried than this than getting the virus

Is anyone else also worried about the effect on their employment?

I'm not overly worried about my employment yet - but it's definitely crossed my mind. I worry we're headed for quite a bad recession, and that'll definitely affect jobs. The sector I work in is likely to be hit quite badly in a recession.

I do worry about my friends though as I have a lot of friends who work in hospitality and zero-hour contracts.

Whitegrenache · 14/03/2020 20:22

Just me then?

OP posts:
EspressoPatronum · 14/03/2020 20:23

Nope, me as well. I'm just returning from maternity leave, I'm a supply teacher and it's looking very likely that the schools will be closing at any moment, and who knows how long for.

We really need my wage. I'm bricking it.

wheresmymojo · 14/03/2020 20:27

It's already happened to me.

No jobs in my sector at the moment at all - we are down to our last 6 weeks of money...

wheresmymojo · 14/03/2020 20:28

I'm the main breadwinner (I forgot to say that) plus DH is a personal trainer and gyms will close in a lockdown.

Whitegrenache · 14/03/2020 20:30

SadI'm sorry for everyone facing financial difficulties

Thanks was made redundant in feb but got my dream job and started last week. I just prey this will pass

My work have told me there is a high probability I will either lose my job, or possibly be offered unpaid leave, or go down to 2 days a week. They don't know yet, depends on cashflow over the next month. At the moment there is no new work coming in, and all our clients are cutting back.
I work in Aberdeen, where huge numbers of people will be affected by the low oil price as well as the knock on effects of Covid19.

In the scheme of things though, I know I am very lucky - being made redundant from a well paid job is much better than being made redundant when you're already only just scraping by. I've been made redundant before and survived. And I am healthy and fit.

I feel awful for those in worse positions, and for all those stranded and unable to get home due to the borders closing, and of course for all those for whom Coronavirus may not be mild.

30not13 · 14/03/2020 20:44

I'm worried.

I work in a private childcare setting and we have been told we won't be paid if we have to close down. If we have to SI or get it of course there's SSP otherwise nothing.

Also fear that the entire business will go bust (not a chain, just one setting) and there'll be no job to go back to.

OH should be ok but again probably not going to be paid, he does have a policy to pay in the event of not earning, wether this is exempt though he will have to find out.

BMW6 · 14/03/2020 20:44

It certainly won't be just you OP. I believe thousands will lose their jobs or livelihoods as a direct result of this pandemic.

For instance - I have a sibling who owns a small hotel and restaurant . All bookings cancelled. No-one coming to eat. She has chef, waiting, bar and cleaning staff.

How long can the business continue with the overheads but zero income? A couple of months at best (and going into serious debt)?
If she has to close that's 5 or 6 people unemployed in a small village with no prospects of employment in fifty miles..........

sigmu87 · 14/03/2020 20:46

I worry for other people as this will lead to many people losing their jobs.

Whitegrenache · 14/03/2020 21:02

This is what most people will be effected by - not just the actual clinical impact of the virus.

Will it come down to economy vs vulnerable people mortality

OP posts:
BBCONEANDTWO · 14/03/2020 21:04

Yep - worried too plus my partner is self employed so there will be no income if we are all locked down. I suppose we just have to get on with it though. Who knows what the country will look like at the end of this.

Tennisp · 14/03/2020 21:11

God yes! I was offered a new role recently and left my temporary position. Start date was agreed 'asap' but now HR paperwork has been delayed and I am worried they will postpone the start date or cancel completely because of coronavirus. Staff in the company have already started working from home so I can't see them asking me to start a contract working from home. I'm in real panic over it. I'm a single parent and need to pay our rent and can't afford not to work Confused Plus it's not like I could easily find something else. Every business/organisation is closing. Trying to keep calm but this will have a huge impact on so many people and the economy...

Whitegrenache · 14/03/2020 21:23

@Tennisp I'm thinking of you and keeping everything crossed for you x

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/03/2020 21:23

I work for a small business so if business dries up then my job is in trouble.

OneFootintheRave · 14/03/2020 21:28

Yep, my partner runs his own business and has to pay salaries and overheads. I think my sector which was already being impacted by Brexit will also suffer and start making redundancies.

By far the most negative impact of this situation will be businesses going under very quickly, especially on the high street, job losses, inability to pay rent /mortgage etc.

I don't think that we ever really recovered from the last economic crisis, just a load of QE and artificially low base rates to keep people buying stuff. A decade of austerity has left the health services unable to cope with basically an uptick in seasonal flu complications leading to this lockdown.

aibutohavethisusername · 14/03/2020 21:31

Yes. I work in a travel money bureau. It was dead today.

YouJustDoYou · 14/03/2020 21:33

Nursery assistant here. I won't be paid. Will have zero income. Husband has also been told they will be looking to lay off jobs shortly. Funtimes.

Tennisp · 14/03/2020 21:36

@Whitegrenache thank you, that's so sweet Flowers Good luck to you too!

Laniakea · 14/03/2020 21:40

We’re really scared as a family - construction, manufacturing, hospitality, entertainment - we’re already seeing the downturn. We’ve barely recovered from 2008 and it feels catastrophic tbh.

Fleetheart · 14/03/2020 21:43

I work for a hotel chain; bookings severely down; I expect hard tomes ahead. Another single parent here, so am worried.

MuchTooTired · 14/03/2020 21:44

I’m worried! I’ve just taken a contract job after being a sahm so have enrolled the kids into nursery. Have to give a months notice on the nursery, am scared I’ll be let go and still be liable for the nursery fees when I’ve not earned enough to cover them 😬

If dh’s work gets shut down then we’re completely up the creek with no paddle!

winniesanderson · 14/03/2020 21:46

@YouJustDoYou Exactly the same scenario here. Being told that the nurseries insurance won't cover our wages and possible redundancies coming at my dps workplace. It's a scary time.

DonnaDarko · 14/03/2020 21:48

I am starting to get worried. We raise funds for good causes. Which is one of the first things people start cutting when money is tight.

EYProvider · 14/03/2020 21:51

I own a nursery.

I’ve hardly slept all week worrying about how I can pay my staff.

You take out insurance in case things like this happen. It isn’t cheap either - I’ve been paying about £200 a month for the past 20 years and never once claimed. Now this and they won’t pay out.

The staff will blame the nurseries. But really it’s the insurance companies they should be pointing the finger at. What they are doing is criminal.
