What will happen if all air travel is stopped?

DS (18) is in Australia at the moment - he has extended his stay because of CV as his original ticket took him to SE Asia. I fully expect him to have to stay for the whole three months of his trip. What would happen if all international air travel was banned? He only has a visa for 3 months.

Nobody will travel.
Apart from repatriation, of course.

He’ll come back by boat?

LaBelleSauvage123 · 14/03/2020 18:36

So do you think they would repatriate everyone who was on extended travels?

There will probably be some kind of emergency registration for people who would otherwise overstay their visas because they cannot get away.

You might have to send money to him, or does his current visa allow him to work?

There are worse places to wait it out

I suspect that in this situation there will be leeway given to people who overstay their Visa.

  1. Loved ones may be separated for longer than planned, many may miss milestone life events with their families.
  2. Many people will lose their jobs as airlines cut back or go under.
  3. Oil prices will tank, markets will fall, and there will be an impact on the value of pensions and investments.
  4. Pollution will decrease as fewer fossil fuels are burned.

It’s all pretty grim apart from the last one.

Hope you see your son soon OP.

DS moved to Sydney last year - he has the 2-year work visa, so will be fine.

But he feels so far away! We were due to be going over for April, but obviously that won't be happening now. I know he's probably safer there than in London.

He has a flight back for a friend's wedding in July, so we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed that's possible at the time.

Horrible times for everyone. Have to say though LaBelleSauvage123, I feel far better with him in Aus than in Asia.

Thank you for your replies - I feel happier that he’s in Australia too! And he is absolutely loving it and doesn’t want to come home.
