I have developed a mild cough

I have NC. I have developed a mild cough. I have not been out of my county, let alone my country, and there are no confirmed cases in the county.

Right now, I am assuming that all I have is a mild cough as no other symptoms, but I'm a tiny bit worried. I know how fate works and so I'm posting about it here so I can feel very silly and delighted when it turns out to be nothing.

I am scared of telling work because I don't want to be labelled a pisstaker grabbing 7 days off for a cough, but I don't want to go against guidance and risk other people's health if it turns out to be real and I'm really, really upset about this bit.

OP I had a tickle yesterday and isolated myself but haven't coughed once today so won't be isolating any further.
I do want to add that just because you haven't been out of your county doesn't mean that others haven't came out of theirs into yours..

You should not be worrying about your reputation at work, but if you are, maybe consider how you would feel to have the reputation of the person who ignored the rules when suffering with the virus?

Yes, this. Worst case scenario, if you pass on something to your colleagues and they find out it was you, they’d probably treat you like a pariah afterwards. They won’t be thankful that you came into work when you’re unwell.

I honestly don't underestimate what you are upset about. You gave a cough, you stay home. It's exactly what's being asked of everyone. If anyone thinks you are lazy, so be it, but I don't think people will.
I was at a religious ceremony this morning. Person behind me coughed quite a bit. I'm so annoyed. They should have just stayed home.

FusionChefGeoff · 14/03/2020 15:32

It's mild for you but what if you pass it on to someone else at work who cares for an immunosuppressed child or elderly relative?

You are doing the right thing 👍👍

I work with kids. This scares me.

I've timed DD coughing, she's coughed 5 times in 10 mins so more frequently than I thought.

You are definitely doing the right thing. Do you have family at home too, support?

Handmaid2019 · 14/03/2020 15:44

Have you got a temperature?

AmputatedSoul · 14/03/2020 15:46

Just seen you work with kids.

Yes you should be isolating. My DDs school sent a letter out asking us not to send our children to school if they have any cold symptoms and if any of the children, staff or people who share a household get diagnosed they will be forced to shut the school.

Please stay at home.

StickyPlant · 14/03/2020 15:58

I am. I've just told my boss.

Op I am the same, started with a sore throat yesterday and been coughing loads today. No fever but feel a bit achey and cold. I totally understand where you are coming from, I need to call my work tomorrow and tell them I won’t be in next week but I feel soooo guilty about it. I hope they don’t think I am taking the piss as I was in yesterday and was fine. I am dreading calling them. Will also be keeping ds home next week too, I have no one else to do the school run for me as dh leaves for work early hours and don’t think I should be up at the school anyway. It’s just one of those things we need to do it, as others say I’m sure folk would rather we are off than potentially infecting others who are more vulnerable

StickyPlant · 14/03/2020 20:13

I have emailed my top boss to explain how upset I am and ask for her support in self-isolating. Hopefully her reply will put my mind at rest.

I didn’t use the phrase ‘self isolating’ when I told work as it sounds so wanky I just said ‘the advice seems very clear that I have to stay at home’ and c&p’d the relevant bit from nhs website.

StickyPlant · 14/03/2020 21:24

I'm afraid I used the wanky phrase Sad

Self isolate. It doesn’t matter what others may think. I hope you are well soon.
