To wish people would stop panic-buying

People who panic-buy really are being silly and ironically, short-sighted. Surely they can see that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy because others see the empty shelves and think "Oh, there's a problem here, I'd better get supplies in now." So those people who aren't panic-buying then go and purchase more of certain items than they would under normal circumstances - and the problem escalates.

There really is enough to go round...…….if we all just continue purchasing what we need. It's not only silly, IMHO, it's also very selfish. Why take more than you need and leave others in deficit? That's very narrow-minded thinking. We have a responsibility towards one another...…........but also our communities of which we are a part. So what anyway if you run out of toilet roll?? Is that the worst possible scenario? That you're stuck on the bog curling one out with Coronovirus and you reach for the toilet roll- and OMG, it's GONE!!!!

FFS!!!

AIBU?

Were you curling one out when you wrote this thread?

WorraLiberty · 14/03/2020 13:47

YABU for not adding your thoughts to the million other panic buying threads.

Currently the advice is that if you have a cough or a fever, you need to self isolate for seven days. So we should all have enough in right now to ensure we could stay in the house and not leave for seven days if we had to. That is the socially responsible thing to do. Not to wait until we have a cough and then decide to go shopping for the week (or go out and walk the dog and everything else people imagine you can do whilst self isolating apparently).

I have enough in the house to keep us for a week. So I don’t have 85 toilet rolls or anything but I have a week’s supply of what we need and we would cope without anything fresh once we had run out.

I also bought enough to keep my parents going because they are elderly and have had to begin self isolating already.

If you have the capacity to stock up enough for 1-2 weeks, you should. It’s selfish to let your cupboards run down and then go out once you should be self isolating for supplies.

I think most of us will have to self isolate at some point.

Its sensible to stock up for a week or 2 supplies. That's what everyone is doing. I wish people would stop referring to it as panic buying. The shelves will soon fill again.

I get that people want to have enough to get them through a 7-14 day period of self isolation, but some people are buying stuff like they're going to be inside for 7 months not 7 days. It's unfair on older people who cant get to lots of different shops just to get toilet roll or soap

It’s sensible to ensure you have enough supplies for 14 days in case of falling ill or having to stay home. Buying now gives peace of mind plus means people don’t have to go out if sick.
