Could Corona virus have long-term effects?

Is it possible that the corona virus could have long-term health effects that come out much later on in life? HSV and Hepatitus are both viruses that have life long effects, Hepatitus also attacks the liver after a period of time. HIV also starts breaking down the immune system over time. Could people who have recovered from corona virus suddenly get even more ill in 5, 10 or 20 years time? Is there any way to tell or we just have to wait and see?

Not trying to scare anyone, just genuinely curious.

Doubt it. Its a corona virus so in the same family as a cold or flu. Which don't have the sort of long term effects as your talking about.

Although hiv and cold are both viruses it's like comparing elephants and mice - both mammals but completely different.

I'd be more worried about mutations like the Spanish flu.

WHo knows, it’s a new virus

I read somewhere recently though that frontline healthcare workers who treated infected sars patient said ended up with lifelong lung problems so there’s definitely a worry that it could leave lasting damage in some people.

Even if it doesn’t leave lasting damage it can take many many months to fully recover from pneumonia, especially if it’s that bad people are having to be ventilated.

Reginabambina · 14/03/2020 11:17

It seems like it could cause permanent lung damage.

longearedbat · 14/03/2020 11:17

You sound as though you are scaremongering.
The effect I think more likely, when this is all over, is that taxes will rise to cover the massive costs being incurred, in much the same way they rose after WW2 to cover war damage and costs.

NellyGrace · 14/03/2020 11:20

Is OP is scaremonging?

I’ve read quite a bit about long term lung damage too.

WhyNotMe40 · 14/03/2020 11:21

Yes to long term Lung damage. I think that's pretty certain at the very least to some people. Probably not all, but some

WhyNotMe40 · 14/03/2020 11:22

Oh and it is not a flu or a cold but a SARS.

Wannabangbang · 14/03/2020 11:23

Considering its a phneumonia type illness, then maybe😕

Dacaday · 14/03/2020 11:23

Yes it can. Any type of virus affecting the lungs can leave long term damage. I believe there have been reports of this already.

Thescrewinthetuna · 14/03/2020 11:25

It’s possible, it’s just a case of wait and see for now though

Wiltinglillies · 14/03/2020 11:30

I don't see it's scaremongering. I've read about almost certain permanent damage in people who progress to the fluid on lungs stage yesterday. The article quote from Chinese research. Would struggle to find the article to link to it amongst the eleventy billion sites I visited yesterday.

Fedupandpoor · 14/03/2020 11:42

@longearedbat I really don't want to scare anyone and apologise if I have.

Evidence coming out of China is that the disease can cause lasting lung damage in recovered patients. Obviously we don't know yet if this is long-term.

Deelish75 · 14/03/2020 16:16

Don’t know.

We’ll have to wait and see. Nothing we can do about it at the moment.
