to think that I won't be able to self isolate if I have to

I have nobody to do the shopping for me or my elderly parents so I will have to carry on with that. I have tried to get a delivery slot today but they are either all fully booked or cost money which is beyond my budget so I will have to go shopping at some point. I don't have other family or friends to call on - parents have dementia, PILs are deceased and parents and us live in a different country to the rest of the family.

I need to go and get medication for both my parents and can't get more yet because their surgery only prescribe a month at a time; they have a week left in stock and the surgery won't authorise a request for another week.

We're on a low income and so can't do a bulk shop in advance.

All those of you who are shocked by delivery slots being booked up for weeks - this is your wake up! While you still can, go and buy enough food for the next week. More if you can afford it.

Oblomov20 · 14/03/2020 14:46

I will buy more.
I do big shops, and also bulk buy at costco, and I batch cook a lot.
But, I normally shop ever other day though because ds's are such big eaters, that I need milk, bread, fruit, because we get through such a lot.

I'll have to meal plan things to buy that aren't fresh.

@polarfrogs Setup a PayPal account and transfer money that way if you don’t want the bank details shared.
We’re all going to have to rely on the kindness of strangers over the next few months to some extent. Get your network in place now to keep your parents safe.

I'm a single parent and it's very tricky, for example I have been ill all last week and have not left the house (had a fever/cough/flu).

However on Monday the school rang me to say my dd needed collecting, luckily I was able to arrange something but I could see how if I'd been totally stuck I'd have had to have picked her up.

I'm also fortunate that I've had kind people dropping off food and dd is quite self sufficient (she's 14yo) but any longer than a week or two we'd really struggle.

Please don't take notice of the stupid post upthread about "self-isolation is a privilege" - it comes from a position of pure ignorance or bitterness.

It is everyone's social and individual responsibility to self-isolate, it isn't some elective jolly where the person decides they are going to put their feet up for 14 days. It requires planning and a degree of hardship because social isolation can be extremely difficult for those who need human contact and solace that comes from others.

@polarfrogs I can recommend the Mind website, where they've put together a very thoughtful and realistic set of recommendations and suggestions that are achievable for people on all budgets and can be flexed to meet the person's individual circumstances.

Waitrose deliver for free

that really is like saying let them eat cake.

I shop at Asda, even with the cost of delivery, I safe a minimum of £20 on my weekly shop compared to waitrose. I know because my mum shops and waitrose and didn't believe me, so we calculated it.

please, low income is not waitrose compatible.

OP, book slots ahead now. I have booked for next wed and the following week. If you look carefully, you can get a £1.50 slot, eg 10 pm. You can put anything in the basket for now, and then closer to the time go on and chaneg it to what you want

their surgery only prescribe a month at a time; they have a week left in stock and the surgery won't authorise a request for another wee

this isn't helpful is it? I understand some medication is controlled but I think there needs to be some relaxing of restrictions to help people stay at home.

steppemum · 14/03/2020 15:37

I safe a minimum of £20

sorry, that should say I SAVE a minimum of £20

Hi, all. We're going to move this thread to the Coronavirus section now.
Thanks,

10 more people have died in UK today,

10 more? That's huge jump. Where is that being reported?

GilchristQ · 14/03/2020 16:16

Also I worked for Asda HQ until late last year.

They have a pandemic plan. They have a 'what happen if we are invaded plan', literally a plan for everything.

When I was there ind December, their plan was to divert resources from stores to online delivery. As an when the government gives them the nudge.

Lots of stores pack the deliveries and they leave from stores now. Some areas have a warehouse just for home delivery.

Resources will be put into deliveries. The problem is, the givenerment havent changed any advice, so they will carry on as normal.

10 would mean the start of the exponential growth :(.

BIWI · 14/03/2020 18:07

Yep, we're seeing the exponential curve now Sad

PickAChew · 14/03/2020 19:27

Sainsburys in our area have slots available for Thursday and Friday and then nothing after that. Glad I booked my delivery for next Tuesday a week ahead. I suspect they are holding back slots so people can't just bag them all weeks ahead.

StCharlotte · 18/03/2020 20:29

I just had a look at nextdoor after seeing references on this thread - the publicise your address, on signing up merrily state they will use your address book, no obvious way to sign out/cancel process /opt out of that. Or to contact them and complain. Complaint straight to information commissioners office. AVOID

I agree. I was a member of its predecessor "Streetlife" where you only had to put your first name and last initial and (possibly - I can't remember) your road. Then it was taken over by Next Door who wanted to show your full name and even your house number. Sod that.
