UK holiday in May-Would you cancel?

OpticVA · 14/03/2020 06:37

Me, DH, and DD are meant to be going on holiday up to Scotland mid May. Staying in a self catering cottage in a relatively rural area. The balance is due to be paid in a couple of weeks and we are struggling to decide if to cancel and lose the deposit or risk paying the remainder but then possibly being unable to go if gov change guidance or we have to self isolate etc. Interested to hear what others would do!

I'd still go - sounds like it's pretty isolated in itself so It's probably the safest place to be right now!

PlumsGalore · 14/03/2020 06:39

No. I’m going Italy in June, I haven’t cancelled....yet. Rural Scotland in May, i would deffo still go.

flowerycurtain · 14/03/2020 06:59

Yes of course I'd go!

BanningTheWordNaice · 14/03/2020 07:03

Personally I’d only go if I’d managed to self isolate beforehand - rural communities have even less of the infrastructure to cope with a large number of cases.

OneEpisode · 14/03/2020 07:05

Do you have travel insurance? because if you haven’t purchased it yet you won’t be able to purchase it now.

Landlubber2019 · 14/03/2020 07:09

I would def go.....

RobynSH · 14/03/2020 07:10

We have similar (but rural Wales)

It's the only holiday this year I think might actually happen!

OneEpisode · 14/03/2020 07:13

May is forecast to be the peak. You risk taking it with you (if you are young it’s often very mild) and spreading it to the vulnerable people in the holiday area.
If someone develops symptoms whilst away from home they may have to stay there too, which might be less comfortable than at home.

CassandraKnew · 14/03/2020 07:19

One thing to consider about holidays is the thread I've just started that details a study that coronavirus can stay on surfaces for 9 days.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/3847630-How-long-Coronavirus-can-stay-on-surfaces?watched=1

In self catering let that starts say Saturday, it's potentially not just the people who were in it the week before you that could have left the disease, it's the people who were in it the week before them.

Holiday let owners could be a major source of spread, they will be meeting lots of different guests. The really dangerous ones are those that suggest "It's just flu". It's not, the UK will be like Italy within a month. Even the government states we are 4 weeks behind.

People need to wake up, smell the threat and forget holidays, the are not essential.

madeyemoodysmum · 14/03/2020 07:23

I'm assuming my British hols will happen. Not till July august tho.

I'm also assuming my May holiday to Malta won't happen. 😥

I would prob still plan to do Scotland in may I believe the worst is two weeks away not 4

OpticVA · 14/03/2020 07:29

Interesting mix of replies! We didn’t get travel insurance stupidly I just completely forgot and I’m aware can’t get now so it’s more the risk of losing the remaining £300 if we pay the balance. We could cancel now and just lose deposit which whilst still not great doesn’t feel so bad. Hadn’t actually thought that if we get ill whilst up there we won’t be able to come back for a week....argh!

Tempted to cancel and maybe try and book a few days away last minute nearer the time depending how things pan out. Don’t have to pay remainder for a couple of weeks though so I’ll just keep a eye on things for now.

I'm going to Scotland for Easter and again for may bank holiday and I'm still going. I will just take a tent if my accommodation cancels on me.

Note: Remember that the people on here saying "Just go...." etc might own holiday lets themselves, so have a motive behind their post.

My only motive is that the less it is spread, it lowers my and others chances of catching it. The spread so far has largely been caused by international travel country to country. Then travel within the country spreads it around it.

thefemalelemur · 14/03/2020 07:34

No. I'm going away in the uk next week and again in May, still plan to go ahead. Will mostly be outdoors anyway and not going anywhere with crowds so won't be at any more risk than at home.

ClashCityRocker · 14/03/2020 07:40

We're going to a cottage in whitby in April, still planning on going as it stands.
And up to the dales in July.

Obviously, we will follow any advice at the time so it may be taken out of our hands, but considering that we live in the same county (and actually drive to whitby for work quite regularly) hoping they can still go ahead.

We are expecting to cancel a trip to London in May, and will probably do so regardless of advice.

CassandraKnew · 14/03/2020 08:17

London in May? Strewth, that could be near the peak!

A song came to mind

Please don't go.... don't goooooooo.... don't go away.

ClashCityRocker · 14/03/2020 08:44

Yeah cassandra barring a miracle, we won't be going regardless of government advice!

We are also resigned to the fact that we might need to be self-isolating at the stage of our whitby/dales holidays, and of course we wouldn't go if that was the case.

hazelnutlatte · 14/03/2020 09:11

We are booked to go to a holiday lodge in May half term, still planning on going at the moment but will reconsider closer to the time if necessary. I wouldn't go and stay in a large hotel or anywhere with lots of shared facilities, but I think self catering accomodation will be ok as we can clean it when we arrive. It will probably be a very different holiday than the one we had originally planned though - pool and entertainment complex might be closed, we will prob just spend time as a family, go for walks and bike rides, spend time playing board games etc.

CassandraKnew · 14/03/2020 09:44

hazelnutlatte,
I don't think you have thought it through what deep cleaning a holiday involves.

This thing stays on fabric/linen until they are washed as well as surfaces. Bedding, towels, settee, curtains, etc. Are you going to wash every cup, glass, piece of cutlery, kitchen utensil? Every hanger in the wardrobe! Once you start thinking about it the list becomes endless.

CassandraKnew · 14/03/2020 09:44

'holiday let' not 'holiday'

ZsaZsaMc · 14/03/2020 14:00

We’re thinking of going away next week in the U.K. to a holiday let. We live in a city and are just as likely to get it here as there

Nquartz · 14/03/2020 14:04

We've got a caravan booked for Easter but even if the park is open I don't think we'll go, I would want to thoroughly clean everything when we arrived (as PP have said it lives on surfaces for days) & I'm getting fed up of doing that at home after 2 days already, I won't want to do it on holiday.

Gyptian · 15/03/2020 20:17

We’re supposed to be going to Wales a week on Friday and really cannot decide whether to go or not. The balance is already paid and no insurance stupidly. There is probably less risk of getting it there than where we are live but I am worried about getting ill whilst there. If OH got sick, I don’t know how we would get back as I don’t drive.

I think we’ll decide a few days before we’re due to go. If pubs/attractions are closed by then, there is probably little point.

SirVixofVixHall · 15/03/2020 20:25

YES.
Rural areas very badly served for health care, and with an older population. If you are carrying the virus, you could spread it into an area far less able to cope than the one you came from, and people could die.
Travel spreads the virus more quickly, hence lockdown .
Please don’t do this. I live in a rural area with lots of holiday cottages, we are very vulnerable .

silverdollarcity · 15/03/2020 20:27

We are going camping in May. It'd be in our own tent, and the campsite isn't massive, but it is always busy over half term week (usually sold out). What makes me a bit uneasy about it is sharing showers, washing up sinks and toilets with other people. My DH will disagree but I really don't know if I would be able to relax and enjoy the holiday unless things get unexpectedly and dramatically better, which I don't think they will.
