Possibly being dumb

I caught my 3mo daughter's cold (thanks) she had a possibly slightly high temp as in 37.6 but by the end of the day it was 37 so i wasn't exactly panicking and a dry cough. Anyway it lasted about a week-is but want that bad. Made her a bit fussy during the day (could also be due to growth spurt) but slept like a log overnight.

So pretty sure it's just a dumb cold. Obviously if there wasn't afecking pandemic going on i wouldn't bother.

The advice is persistent cough and fever. As of yet i have neither! I have a sniffle and a ticklish throat. However it possibly will get worse before going away. And if it follows the same progression as my daughter's I'll get a cough.

Do i isolate for 7 days? I'm really annoyed. I don't want to go around spluttering and causing everyone else to have a panic attack. I want to be safe as well obviously.

Next weekend we are meant to be taking our daughter to see the family for the first time. So i guess even if i do isolate i could still go as Friday-first skins be 7 days and i very much doubt it is the bloody cv.

Today we were planning on painting pottery with daughters feet to give to grandparents. But now i fear that idea will go down the pan.

Do i wait until i have the persistant fight and high fever (unlikely) or just isolate anyway? Impossible to prevent cold from happening and if have thought if everyone isolated tenders every time acold popped up world def grind to a halt.

But part of me feels i should so not to cause concern to others. Daft i guess as i didn't exactly isolate my baby when she had a cold but now wondering if i should have... Even though she's just a baby and seems silly. Half if baby group was full of snot anyway.

Blah blah blah!

It’s really difficult isn’t it. The advice on paper seems very clear, but applying it to one’s own situation is blurred by worry and over-thinking.

The advice says no, you don’t need to isolate. If you had a high temperature or a cough then you should, but you don’t. Your symptoms appear to be a normal cold, so there’s no risk of it developing into coronavirus (although like everyone you could still catch it).

I’m in a similar situation to you today (although much older and with no small children!) and am planning to do normal things but keep a close eye on my temperature, and will isolate if there’s a hint of a change towards CV symptoms.

Next weekend is a whole week away - I’m not making any plans at all because so many things may change by then.

Stay safe and enjoy your day.

I think you should

BertiesLanding · 14/03/2020 10:04

Good grief, people! It is VERY SIMPLE:

  • Persistent cough? Isolate
  • Fever? Isolate

You don't have to have both. There are NO exceptions.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 14/03/2020 10:24

Berties it’s very simple if you definitely have either of those symptoms, but if you have a bit of a cold without either it’s not easy to decide whether you should stay in just in case. At the very least we should be avoiding spreading other infections to essential workers.

Fishbaby · 14/03/2020 10:27

Rudeness is the worst pandemic tat seems to sweep across the internet worse than any virus. Shane people can't self isolate for that. Hmm

I know perfectly well the rules. But I'm bound to get one or the other or both. Last cold i had was a persistent cough.

If you have to even think about whether or not you should self isolate, then you should self isolate in my opinion. Err on the side of caution. Keep yourself and others safe.

DitheringDoris · 14/03/2020 10:33

The rudeness I’ve seen over the boards the last week or so has been awful. I know these are worrying times and most people are feeling some anxiety.
I would err on the side of caution and self isolate in your position.
Anybody, child or adult should be self isolating with a new cough or a raised temperature.
The government are not looking at our best interests so we have to take steps ourself to look after ourselves, our families and each other.

crazydiamond222 · 14/03/2020 10:37

Self isolate. You don't want to be spreading a cold around at the moment as it will cause other people who catch it to have similar concerns and there is enough fear as it is.

BertiesLanding · 14/03/2020 10:40

I'm sorry if I came across as being rude.

However, there are so many people out there who seem to be unaware of their potential impact on others that it beggars belief. I have people I know at the frontlines of this, and they are going to have one hell of a job over the next weeks and months - so erring on the strong side of caution when you are symptomatic is critical, and not just for them, but for those whose lives are in their hands.

eandz13 · 14/03/2020 10:40

I started with a bit of a sniffle yesterday too, slightly raised temp and I am positively certain it's just a minor cold, like every other cold I've felt before but I'm going to isolate anyway until it's better. I figured even if I'm just spreading a cold to someone, they could then think it's corona and potentially cause more stress to the NHS if they're more anxious about their symptoms. Plus, I wouldn't want to give someone a cold on top of corona if their system is already weakened. 🤷🏻‍♀️

BertiesLanding · 14/03/2020 10:41

if you have a bit of a cold without either

Going entirely on guidelines, you don't need to isolate. But you can if you want to.

forestdweller11 · 14/03/2020 10:41

It's cough AND fever = isolate
Fever = isolate

BertiesLanding · 14/03/2020 10:43

Persistent cough = isolate

BertiesLanding · 14/03/2020 10:44

Anyone with a "new, continuous" cough or high temperature is now advised to self-isolate for seven days

It's an "or" there, not an "and". A continuous cough alone is enough to isolate.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 14/03/2020 11:41

Going entirely on guidelines, you don't need to isolate. But you can if you want to

Yep, that’s kind of my point. The advice is clear, but we naturally try to second guess what will happen next and act accordingly.

BertiesLanding · 14/03/2020 11:48

Totally agree, @WiseUpJanetWeiss - Not least because a significant number of people are confused/in denial/will simply go about their days anyway.

seven201 · 14/03/2020 13:09

@forestdweller11. That's not right it's new continuous cough or temp to isolate for seven days.

forestdweller11 · 14/03/2020 13:38

Mixed messages - NHS says either cough or fever and gov.uk says and/or (Thursday). Not sure what to think !

BertiesLanding · 14/03/2020 15:55

That's the same thing, @forestdweller11. The "and" is surplus to requirements, that's all.

Listlesspenguin · 14/03/2020 16:37

Gawd I'm dense...
