Immunocompromised parent - remove kids from school?

My DH is currently in remission from leukaemia but still undergoing chemotherapy treatment for the next 4 months. He will remain immunocompromised for 3 months following the end of his treatment.

We are debating whether or not to remove the children (aged 11 and 7) from school from Monday to avoid them potentially bringing the illness home.

Is anyone else in a similar position? What are you doing? Do you foresee keeping them home for the next several months?

Realistically I can cope with this, I've been through far worse than having a couple of children knocking about and have seen the online learning links that have been posted all over the place. I'm not currently working as I'm a full time carer for DH atm so we're lucky enough to not have to worry about time off work.

I would, given your DH's circumstances and the fact that you are at home anyway.

I'd only do it if you truly plan to isolate yourselves though. There's little point withdrawing from school if you then take kids to the playground, supermarket etc.

And for everyone's sanity I would draw up a timetable separating out lessons from family time in the day.

Yes, I would. Best wishes.

Hi, yes I did this today. I spoke to head and he was fully supportive of our decision to take kids out now. I wrote an email explaining why we were taking kids out and asked him to call to discuss. He said schools are going to shut soon anyway. Also, our school emailed parents to say that kids who have coronavirus in the home, can still go to school. (I told him I thought this was wrong, he said that BoJo said it on TV! ). You don't want that level of risk. Go for it.

Thank you all. It's so hard to know what to do. DS is in Year 6 and I know it would be so sad for him to finish his primary school time suddenly like this (if schools actually close and don't reopen).

I'm such a law-abiding citizen normally it goes against all my instincts but it does seem to be the best course of action.
