Travel insurance won't pay out for cancellation due to FO advice

Just checked my insurance for holiday to Greece in the summer and seen it won't pay out for this Sad.

Churchill and Direct Line not selling travel insurance atm, can't see any on comparison site that will pay out for this. FFs - I'm going to lose the money... Anyone else? Seen a lot of threads on here that seem to assume all will pay out if advice is not to go, but obviously they all don't. And no I didn't get the cheapest.

Does anyone know if trump
Shuts the borders to the UK if we would get a refund?

There was a story on the news of a family due to go to india, their insurance wouldn’t pay out because the fco had banned travel but because their airline were still flying there they couldn’t get their money back. This is where some greedy travel/insurance companies will try to use small print and technical points to not pay out.so frustrating .

This is not quite right. The FCO has not banned travel to India. India has banned tourists by revoking visas. Insurance has never covered visa non-approval / revocation.

I've not claimed on my insurance for my half term holiday as I know that will only pay out if the FCO says 'all but essential travel' restrictions.

However, we did make the decision not to go to France in a couple of weeks tine for various reasons linked to potential isolation when there or when back, and things being closed when we get there. I'm sad not to be going as it was part of DD's 18th birthday celebrations, but felt it was necessary.

Invade others have bookings they're not sure if they'll pay out. This is what we've had today.

Booking.com

  • we had a paid upfront booking which meant no refund. However I noticed a new button appear under the cancel which said to request a refund change - and they've just emailed me back (within a few minutes but the 48 hours they first said it could take) saying there's no charge and I'll get a refund.

Europcar

  • already paid but could cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before. I noticed this had changed to 24 hours this morning.

Holiday Extras

  • was our uk airport hotel and parking. That's been a no charge cancellation. We have a voucher from them to use in the next few months or so.

EasyJet

  • we booked on a no change type booking. However it now says we can change our flight free of charge to a new date or location but I can't figure out how to do this on their app. I'll look online on my computer later. We will just have to think about another date we can consider.

I'm not sure the insurance companies are greedy. We are all in this.

Christmastree43 · 14/03/2020 08:41

We are all in this but it doesn't seem fair that insurance companies get to keep all their money, holiday companies get to keep all their money that we've paid them, but customers lose everything? I don't think that sounds like we're all in it together. Even if we all split the difference that would seem a lot fairer.

Insurance companies always seem to come out on top.

Insurance companies always seem to come out on top.
Their business model has to ensure they do, or there wouldn't be a business!

True!

teenagetantrums · 14/03/2020 08:58

Out of interest l checked my policy yesterday. We got back from canaries this week so it's imaterial not. But It does not cover FCO advice says so on first page.
This was not something l even thought about when l took out policy last year.
Who would have thought about that when traveling to canaries. Will be more careful next time l get insurance

I just said to dp, we had never considered lots of things to do with holidays and insurance before - 2 years ago he had a heart problem on holiday which changed how we shop for holidays and insurance/ now with this, it feels like we will all learn big lessons unfortunately on what to cover/not cover in future

DonnaDarko · 14/03/2020 09:38

I know someone who works for a travel insurance company and they're literally adding it into all their policies that they don't cover coronavirus. If you want it covered, they might up your premium significantly. I suggest everyone confirms with their travel insurer what will or will not be covered.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/03/2020 09:57

I would have thought that Coronavirus would come under the 'act of God' type clause which seems to exclude payouts from natural disasters.

for even

If the FCO still say it's safe to travel to the US then no, you won't! Your travel provider may offer you a change of dates with you paying/being refunded any difference in price.

What about through credit card as it would be a goods not received issue?
