Stuck in Poland?

My little brother is on holiday in Poland - I’ve just seen the news they are closing the borders this weekend! His phone is turned off - classic - and I’m worried all the remaining flights out will get bought up.
Does anyone know how this works? My mum is wondering about booking flights tomorrow for them.

A bit more information here:

Radical measures in Poland:

  • borders set to close for at least 10 days
  • international flights suspended from 00:01 Sunday
  • shopping malls restricted to groceries, pharmacies & health/beauty
  • restaurants to close, only takeaway allowed
  • public events restricted to max 50 ppl
  • Poles and non-Poles resident in Poland will be allowed back in, subject to 14 days quarantine
  • borders closed to visiting non-Poles

He needs to contact the airline

When is he due home?

cz123 · 14/03/2020 06:41

He can hire a car! Roads will still be open!

Seventyone72seventy3 · 14/03/2020 06:54

If the borders are closed he can't hire a car. How would he even get it back? I hope he does her back but I also don't understand how people are still travelling. It was going to be a risk.

Laks0007 · 14/03/2020 07:10

I live here so I know - you can get out by road to Germany. The thing is I think the airlines stopped selling tickets around 30 mins after the announcement. It said all sold out so I think they might have blocked the seats so they can get home. When I spoke to the Embassy before the announcement ( PL government were already hinting they would do this ), the Embassy told me British Citizens wouldn't be repartiated either. So he either waits until the airline opens or starts thinking about taking a bus/train to Germany or hiring a car. Trains will have to be taken today, rail will close too.

Obviously you can translate on chrome

@Seventyone72seventy3 don't be so judgemental. It's not helpful. OP wants help it's scary. I'm studying here, should I have risked that? University actually advised to stay!
Maybe he has an old Grandma in PL on her last legs, he was visiting her.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 14/03/2020 07:38

I'm not being judgemental and I said I hope he gets home! On other threads plenty of people are saying they are continuing to travel which seems crazy to me but then again I'm in Italy and I have been stuck at home for ages so obviously that changes my outlook!

Another Brit living in Poland here! Definitely try to get the airline to help first. If that goes pear-shaped, as Laks said, train today or bus.

There are good train connections with Berlin from most of the cities popular with tourists in Poland but he might have trouble getting on a train today if there is a rush to leave. I haven't heard anything about buses being cancelled so that should still be an option. If none of those options work, I think he would still be able to get to one of the border towns and walk across the border to Germany and get a bus/train from there.

One option would be to get to Słubice, walk to Frankfurt an der Oder (it's not a long walk!) and get a train to Berlin. But I heard some talk that some border crossings will be closed entirely so he should make sure where he is headed will be open. There are also rumours about restrictions on travel inside Poland being implemented soon, so I wouldn't wait around.

We are in the same situation. We stuck in Poland and we are searching some way how to get away. I found a site - BiletyAutokarowe.pl
I hope it will help you. We are going to use this site.

annabellethecannibelle · 14/03/2020 17:49

Flixbus.pl is kind of like Megabus. They have buses to Germany.

MrsJoshNavidi · 14/03/2020 17:59

Surely the borders are only closed for incoming? They'll let people leave, especially foreigners.

annabellethecannibelle · 14/03/2020 18:56

Yes, of course. But there won't be trains or flights out so you have to leave by road somehow. Most Poles coming back into the country have to go into quarantine for 14 days so getting someone to drive you out isn't so easy. On top of that some of the neighbouring countries aren't allowing foreigners to enter either and the number of border crossings on those borders still crossable for foreigners will be reduced.

annabellethecannibelle · 14/03/2020 20:28

Just in case anyone reads this for info on how to get home, flixbus.pl have announced that they won't be running buses to/from Poland either. I don't know about other bus operators.

There are three border crossings where you can cross into Germany on foot that will stay open. They are:
Gubin – Guben
Słubice – Frankfurt an der Oder
Kostrzyn nad Odrą – Kietz

You should be able to get a bus or train to the Polish town and walk across and get public transport on the German side to e.g. Berlin.

Annanolan · 15/03/2020 16:39

Guys, I stuck in Poland too. I had to change my flight but I'm pretty sure I won't fly anywhere because Poland is gonna close their borders for longer. I live in usa, as a resident I can come back there, but how? I tried everything. Here is more poeple like me, maybe open a group on Facebook?

I can call your brother if you still need to contact him.

annabellethecannibelle · 15/03/2020 17:42

Try firstly to get the airline you were supposed to leave with to help you. The British Embassy in Warsaw said on Twitter that there will still be some flights out. Otherwise contact your embassy.

The situation is changing all the time. Germany will also close some borders in the morning and by the time you get there, it might be difficult to arrange onward travel.

If you have travel insurance, contact them too.
