Does adding a few drops of dettol to shower gel make it "anti-bacterial" ?

I have given up on finding any handwash in the shops. Does adding a few drops of dettol to a shower gel make it an anti-bacterial hand wash??

Have you tried Tesco express? The small stores seem to have stuff the big shops have ran out of here

Pentium85 · 13/03/2020 21:26

I second the PP. big stores near me have sold out but corner shops have evefu

HermioneWeasley · 13/03/2020 21:26

If you have detergent (soap/shower gel) that’s sufficient to kill the virus. You don’t need to add Dettol.

dementedpixie · 13/03/2020 21:26

Handwash doesn't need to be antibacterial. Just use shower gel as it is or use bubble bath or a bar of soap

multivac · 13/03/2020 21:26

Why, in the face of a viral crisis, would you be worried about antibacterial properties of your handwash?

cheeseandcrackers · 13/03/2020 21:27

I don't think so. No need for antibacterial handwash anyway, plain old soap will do. There's plenty still available on my Tesco home delivery app.

dementedpixie · 13/03/2020 21:28

Its the detergent bit that works against viruses not the antibacterial agents

MilkLady02 · 13/03/2020 21:28

COVID-19 is a virus, not bacteria.

GuyFawkesDay · 13/03/2020 21:28

Dettol won't change anything.

Use soap.

Loppy10 · 13/03/2020 21:29

As everyone has said, you don't need antibacterial. Soap and any detergent will dissolve the lipid coating of coronavirus and destroy it

RogueV · 13/03/2020 21:30

A good old bar of imperial leather is fine

theflushedzebra · 13/03/2020 21:30

Normal soap and hot water is fine for hand washing. The most effective thing, in fact.

For surfaces, you can use ordinary household bleach, diluted according to the instructions on the bottle.

Seasprayandsunshine · 13/03/2020 21:31

You can put some tea tree oil in it it makes you feel better? That's supposedly anti bacterial.

Although washing throughly with hot water will do the job anyway.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 13/03/2020 21:32

Hot as you can cope water + any old soap + good technique is what matters in handwashing. The technique is arguably the most important bit becasue the rubbing is what agitates whatever's is on the skin in order for it to be removed.

Mrsjayy · 13/03/2020 21:33

Just use soap i mean you can add dettol if you want but ordinary soap and water is fine.

R2221 · 13/03/2020 21:33

great info. Thanks a lot !!

I looked every where. It's MENTAL in my town. There is plenty of shower gel though. I'll buy some tomorrow.

It doesn't need to be antibacterial, a bar soap will do. I can still get my favourite hand soap because everyone is so focussed on carex and dettol. Also second the suggestions of smaller stores or petrol stations.

Fishcakey · 13/03/2020 21:42

Use soap and water and wash the virus down the plug hole.

PuzzledObserver · 13/03/2020 21:42

The water doesn’t particularly need to be hot, does it? We can’t tolerate water hot enough to actually kill the virus, it’s the soap which does that. The water temperature is about comfort and lathering.

LeeMiller · 13/03/2020 21:43

Soap is fine. Washing up liquid. Bar soap. Shower gel. All fine.

Anti-bacterial isn't important as it's a coronaVIRUS not bacteria (and we should really avoid using anti-bac stuff unnecessarily)

Mrsjayy · 13/03/2020 21:45

I think shower gel is probably the same as liquid soap anyway so if you want to just use that use it.

DoubleAction · 13/03/2020 21:46

How many time do you need telling? Soap and water is all you need. Any soap.

Mrsjayy · 13/03/2020 21:47

I use washing up liquid for washing my hands in the kitchen always have.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 13/03/2020 21:51

True I suppose. I dont feel like I've done a good enough job if it isnt hot (not unbearably hot). It helps the soap to lather too.

Allaboardthemagicbus2020 · 13/03/2020 21:56

So, what should you use to wash down surfaces (door handles, light switches, bannisters?

Washing up liquid?
