How easy is it to actually take a week off?

I work in a school. Last week a couple of my pupils had cold/cough symptoms, prior to current advice, no foreign travel etc. I am now ill with same symptoms most likely caught from them. If I ring school on Monday they are most likely to think i’m skiving and will be expected in regardless as that’s the kind of place it is.
How is everyone else coping with this? I’m not self isolating as yet as i’m confused, though i’ve not been in close contact with anyone either.

Oops coronavirus symptoms

LowcaAndroidow · 13/03/2020 22:20

You're really not that busy and important!

You do understand that people are going to die from this, don't you? Lots of people. Probably even some people you love Confused

daffodilbrain · 13/03/2020 22:24

Persistent means: continuing to exist or occur over a prolonged period.

This is no time for stupidness let's all be sensible

Jenasaurus · 13/03/2020 22:28

The one thing about not testing for minor symptoms and only those that present as severe, there is a risk that someone will have a cough, take 7 days off, return to work, a few days later become unwell again and need another 7 days off, at least if tested they would know the second illness was likely to be a cold, and nothing more, so for people that work in schools, hospitals etc, the chances are they will pick up infections repeatedly but would need to be off for maybe 3-4 seperate 7 days periods, whereas if they knew they had had it, in the first episode, could be there for others rather than isolating again.

Peanut55 · 13/03/2020 22:29

This has to be a joke surely.

How is someone teaching the next generation but can't follow simple rules from our government and health service?

Stay in for 7 days. Do not leave your house. Work from home. No shops, no walk down to the park. You self isolate for the sake of the vulnerable in our society.

BeeFarseer · 13/03/2020 22:31

If you go out tomorrow for a thermometer after the symptoms you've described, you're a cunt. Simple as.

strawberrylipgloss · 13/03/2020 22:37

My dd is in y12 and doing AS exams this summer. One of her teachers has been off for the last 2 days because he has a cough and fever.

You need to self isolate before you infect the other teachers and children

OntheWaves40 · 14/03/2020 07:14

I didn’t cough much through the night and have a sore manky throat this morning so that’ll explain the fever and cough. Not being goady just confused because if I self isolate now then actually get it in a couple of weeks it’s going to be difficult.
I’ve not seen anything about having a sore throat causing the cough, more coming from lungs so I would assume I’m fair safe but I will be self isolating and seeing what develops between now and Monday morning

Love2cycle · 14/03/2020 07:18

You should stay home but I know what your getting at.
I think people are worried that if I take a week off for a cough, then I might have to have another week off as children have got a cough and can't go to school. Then what if the schools closed, thats maybe another 2 to 4 weeks off. Could end up with alot of time off work.

okiedokieme · 14/03/2020 07:20

I spoke to my gp friend on this. A runny nose isn't a symptom and coughing should be fairly frequently to count, once every few minutes. I work with vulnerable adults so need to be extra careful, handily he is available for medical advice!

TrojanWhore · 14/03/2020 07:23

"I’m too busy to self isolate on a maybe"

This isn't a maybe

"I will be self isolating and seeing what develops between now and Monday morning for 7 days as this is such a cut case"

Fixed that for you

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 14/03/2020 07:31

The advice is self isolate for 7 days if you have a continuous cough or a fever.

You have a fever.

Stay in your house. And for fuck’s sake stay out of the supermarket and pharmacy.

In a fortnight’s time this country will most likely be in a very different place and you won’t need to worry about whether your Head is annoyed with you. How bad it is for everyone depends on whether people like you do the right thing.

PissesWhencoughs · 14/03/2020 07:35

I work in an early years centre and our SLT have told us verbally they don’t support the government advice.
They expect us to come in with cough and cold symptoms and any ‘questionable’ self isolating will be addressed severely.
When we questioned this as a group we were sent snotty emails back insinuating we were looking for an excuse to call in sick. We’re also not to send any children home with coughs or colds.
They’re a fucking disgrace.

Femail · 14/03/2020 07:37

Get someone else to get your thermometer for you we dont want your germs

Ilovefoodnotgym · 14/03/2020 07:41

I agree that schools are shit when it comes to time off, unless you’re visibly dying they expect you to go in.... but tough. They and you will have to suck it up. Of course it’s massively inconvenient abut you know what’s MUCH WORST? People dying because others are not following advice. Think of how many children and their families you could infect! It’s a NEW cough with a temperature. Please don’t go in. It’s incredibly selfish.

DoubleAction · 14/03/2020 07:41

The requirement is only to self isolate for a "new and persistent" cough, so it's not necessary for a scratchy throat/tickly cough

If you have a persistent cough you need to self isolate. They've reduced it to 7 days which will be much more manageable and schools and other employers will have to live with it. Teachers are in a far better position than most over this. No one is going to stop your pay or sack you.

itispersonal · 14/03/2020 07:43

My dd(7) came home with a bad headache last night and now she is coughing. I take it we self isolate too. Not sure what our bosses will say.

lakequeen · 14/03/2020 07:47

@itispersonal

At the moment, the government only ask that the affected person self isolates, the whole household doesn't need to yet. Obviously someone needs to be off to look after her though..

Ohmymg · 14/03/2020 07:47

pisses I’ve heard this a lot from friends in early years. Money will be at the root of it and can understand the OP’s worries if she doesn’t have an understanding/sensible SLT. Friends who work in call centres being treated similarly- I can’t help thinking ignoring this advice is going to backfire spectacularly fairly soon.

Ds has tonsillitis last week, had a fever, cough, headache etc. No fever since Tuesday and generally very well, he’s just been left with a cough(mostly after running/activity and pretty typical for him) and has been to school with their blessing since Wednesday. I know people will hear the cough and possibly question it. But as it’s not new and there is no longer a fever I’m not keeping him home.
Had it just started or fever was present I would absolutely isolate him.

itispersonal · 14/03/2020 07:50

@lakequeen

Thanks though I work in a school and partner in a supermarket. So which one to have the time off with her. Both of a high likely hood if it is cv (probably isn't as lots of children in her class have been ill over last 2 weeks) of passing it to a lot of other people

80sMum · 14/03/2020 08:03

I work in a school, in the back office so don't have contact with any of the children and very little contact with the teachers.

I've got an annoying, fairly persistent cough that I've had for about 6 weeks already. It comes and goes. Just as I start to think it's gone, it seems to return, although it's nowhere near as bad as it was a month ago.

I'm assuming that as it's not a "new" cough, I am OK to go into work next week. But I do find it very embarrassing if/when I cough at work. I'm getting plenty of exercise going out to wash my hands every half hour or so!
I share an office (desks are 4 metres apart though and there is a door dividing our spaces, which we can closed if we want to - in practice it's always open.

OntheWaves40 · 14/03/2020 18:06

I now have a streaming nose so presumably it’s a cold that’s causing the temp spikes and my cough is tickly, getting more frequent but still not loads.
Do I self isolate as have cough/temp spikes or do I go to work as I clearly have a cold?

OP posts:
IsolationMum · 14/03/2020 18:13

@OntheWaves40 if you have a cough OR a temperature you have to isolate for 7 days.
Doesn't matter what you think the cause is. Some people with coronavirus get a runny nose too. Mild symptoms are very much like a cold which is why everyone with a cough or a temperature needs to isolate.

People have got to stop thinking they are an exception to the rules or a special case.

Selfsettling3 · 14/03/2020 18:16

You can have the corona virus and a runny nose.

You have been told time and time again if you have a temp or cough then you need to self isolate. You have both so you need to self isolate.

bellinisurge · 14/03/2020 18:19

Do what you are expected to do. We are all busy.
