I just had a thought:

What happens to tenants if landlords can’t afford mortgage payments and the property gets repossessed? It’s quite terrifying to think about😳

Well they are giving 3 month payment holidays for ALL mortgages (including buy to let) so..... if LL dont have to pay mortgage - tenants wont pay either. Also evictions are now illegal for the timebeing so if I cant afford I wont pay. Period. Id rather get food and pay my utilities so they dont cut gas & elec off rather than paying full rent. The rents in UK are over extortionate ANYWAY. A big thank you to the Govt for making tenants life easier during these scary times!!!!

And don’t give me the line that not everyone can save

I'm a renter and I saved 8 weeks pay. It's not enough. Dh lost his job overnight due to being required to isolate (serious health reasons). To avoid infecting him, I've had to take unpaid leave from my job. My own specialist told me to expect isolation to last six months.

Guess we'll be living on the streets after week 8. On the plus side, if dh can't have his home dialysis he'll die pretty quickly, and I'll get some insurance money I can use to give to another ll if they'll have me.

No ordinary person could forsee needing 6 months plus in the bank, and no ordinary person could save it.

@Undecided91 be aware though that you are not ‘let off’ with the rent. It will be accumulating as a debt. If when things are back to normal, your landlord can no longer afford to run the flat and therefore sells and you have to move on, you will then have a bad payer record and will find it difficult to get another place.
This new situation is not an opportunity just to decide not to pay.

In the midst of all this, my LLs have decided to put my flat on the market after i've rented here for 15 years.

Even though this feels like my home and i'm very upset, I knew it wasn't my possession and they might sell at some stage but their timing sucks as its so much more stress, worry and money (movers etc) to try and cope with.
