How long does the virus stay on surfaces?

My 4 year old is mad about a certain toy. I found one on eBay and ordered it from a UK seller. I got a confirmation message in Chinese! Wtf. I messaged the seller straightaway to cancel, but I got a dispatched message the next day. Something is now arriving from China. My child is crazy about that toy.

Ok, so my question is, if I collect it and leave it alone in the garage for a few days, would it be safe to open/use?

You realise that a lot of the things in your house will have been made in china right?

R2221 · 13/03/2020 19:32

It’s not about China made stuff/Chinese stuff at all. It’s about getting something straight from China NOW.

Just Milton the fuck out of it.

WitchDancer · 13/03/2020 19:35

They say 24 - 48 hours unless it's a metal surface.

MrsWolf2 · 13/03/2020 19:38

I’d be more worried about the package being coughed all over by the delivery person than it being from China at the moment.

Sorry can’t help with who long the virus can live for, all I’ve read is vague like a few days.

Twickerhun · 13/03/2020 19:41

Absolute max 3 days on surfaces but you need enough of it and fresh stuff to make you ill - a slight left over remain of corona may live on a surface but you are not going to get sick from a tiny remnant. Mostly the flu bugs die after 3 hours and corona is similar in structure to flu viruses

Twickerhun · 13/03/2020 19:42

Is someone sneezed into a hand and put their hand on something you touched seconds later you’ll maybe get corona. But the risk of a parcel from China is Beyond tiny.

Yes indeedy!

R2221 · 13/03/2020 19:46

Ok, so if I leave it alone overnight, it’s fine right?

Good Lord. It really doesn’t work that way.

delilahbucket · 13/03/2020 19:55

By the time it gets to the UK anything on it will be dead. You don't even need to leave it overnight. There's a far greater risk from the person delivering it!

Apart from what PP said, depending on what the toy actually is you would be better of checking the toy itself e.g. materials made from, dye, construction are actually safe for your 4 year old since you brought it of eBay. eBay is known for selling dodgy products.

Deary me

🙈

SirVixofVixHall · 13/03/2020 20:02

John Campbell on youtube says that heat helps destroy the virus, so just leave the package somewhere warm for a few days. Near a radiator or something .

theworstwife · 13/03/2020 20:13

It can survive on some surfaces for up to 72 hours. I wouldn’t be overly concerned about the product being from China. Like all post it will be handled by a number of people any of whom could have coronavirus on their hands. Just like surfaces everywhere
