What does it actually mean to have the Uk on lockdown? And is it likely to happen?

You mean a lockdown like Italy which was a pretend one where people still went to work, shops, bars restaurants open, public transport running ect, only thing you couldnt do was travel between regions.

HeresMe · 13/03/2020 19:10

What level of lockdown you proposing, as certain levels get to point where society collapses and I'd rather have covid than that.

TotesGodsWill · 13/03/2020 19:27

To extrapolate from current reaction, a farce where public transport still runs, planes in and out of the country continue, people are still expected to go to work, shops will still open, schools may close but not nurserys

PopcornZoo · 13/03/2020 19:31

Nobody really seems to know what "lockdown" means...(and why not just "locked"?)

Luckystar777 · 13/03/2020 19:49

I thought Italians are only allowed out for meds or food?

HeresMe · 13/03/2020 19:55

Luckystar77 nope, you do understand what would happen if a country shut down properly it would collapse completely

That is true.. food shops, banks and chemists are the only things open to the public. There is guidance about what you can do. You can only go outside if it is essential so health reasons for people or.animals so vet visits are ok) , if traveling to work ( you need to show a permit for that) if buying food or necessities. They have a list the sorts of things considered ' necessary'. They do allow exercise( walking, running, cycling) if it is outside and and you need to stay 1-2 metres away from other people...

Anyone with symptoms must not go out at all.for.any reason except for a health emergency

nonamemummy · 13/03/2020 19:56

So I’m guessing from you’re responses that nothing would happen then? To me When I hear ‘lock down’ I think of everyone in their homes, no transport, shops etc closed. But that doesn’t seem possible. Which obviously it isn’t then?

People are actually generally keeping to the rules at the moment. There was an initial panic but that stopped after a couple of days

ethelredonagoodday · 13/03/2020 20:00

My friend is Italian and in Milan. She's worked from home for the last month. Been out for food shopping and that's it.

bumblingbovine49 · 13/03/2020 20:00

The police are doing spot checks and therr are fines if you are doing something you shouldn't. People are also policing each other quite a bit and helping each other out to buy things. There is almost no online deliveries in Italy

They have also introduced a low that if you deliberately contravene the rules imposed and as a result infect someone, you can be charged with murder or attempted murder with up.to.21 years in prison

A member of my family lives in SF. They are on lockdown, all schools closed, most work places closed. A few shops open and restaurants but other entertainment places closed. Spoke to her today, they are going stir crazy after 2 days. No friends are wanting to do play dates, no one going out. But when I spoke to them they were going to the park and for a meal.

Are people allowed to visit other people?

Ofitck · 13/03/2020 20:08

I'm in a Basque Country on lockdown. We've been told not to go to playgrounds and other peoples houses. Big shops like Zara and mango have closed and they are going to close most others except supermarkets and pharmacies next week. Schools are using google classroom (I'm a teacher so using this and other online tools) my own kids are really little so it's been a nightmare today and it's only day 1. I think tomorrow we're going to fill up with petrol and go find an isolated mountain so we can run about a bit.
