"Do not just let this fire burn" From WHO

Is this a dig at our Governement?

*Not testing alone,” he said. “Not contact tracing alone. Not quarantine alone. Not social distancing alone. Do it all. Find, isolate, test and treat every case, to break the chains of transmission … Do not just let this fire burn.”

Somewhere I think he intimated that the UK's strategy was dangerous.

All nations if the UK are signed up to the approach we are taking

Literally completely true. Haven't you been watching the news? Nicola Sturgeon came out straight after the Cobra meeting and said she was banning public gatherings (which BoJo and his Eton mess claimed was unnecessary). She may well have closed schools if she had the option to do so (education is devolved but she doesn't have the power over tax and employment law to ensure employees get paid if they have to stay at home with the kids and that employers get a tax break if they lose employees to childcare duties)

In Northern Ireland the co-first minister Michelle O'Neill has today called for the immediate closure of schools and banning gatherings.

Loppy10 · 13/03/2020 19:34

Completely untrue

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/03/2020 19:34

this is not his policy. It is a policy devised by experts.

I think the government heavily influenced this policy devised by experts. Up to 80% infection has been bandied around for a while. I think the experts were asked to come up with this policy and a way of selling it to the British public. Imagine the pressure Bozo is in to make post Brexit Britain work. No other PM / head of state needs to prove themselves in quite the same way.

I fully expect the advisors started from the WHO position. Then were asked to look again at other scenarios. We are in a quasi dictatorship after all.

MangoFeverDream · 13/03/2020 19:36

The WHO is definitely political as they declared a pandemic way too late, I suspect they were under a lot of pressure not to by China govt

Griefmonster · 13/03/2020 19:44

NS did that on the basis of resources needed to support large events in Scotland not for public health reasons. And they absolutely would close schools if they thought that would have an impact on public health. Didn't know about Northern Ireland but they are attached to Rep of Ireland so may well have had an impact on their decisions. These decisions don't mean they are not following the same advice. There will be local differences in execution (like how some schools have closed already because of local pressures).

If you want to believe UK Gov are out to get us then fine. Carry on.

I chose not to believe it and genuinely feel worried for the fear and stress discussion like this spreads at a serious time.

bemoreeverything · 13/03/2020 19:58

I don't believe they are 'out to get us'. I believe they are not doing enough to protect us. It's not the same

Griefmonster · 13/03/2020 20:10

I understand it is a worrying time. It is a very serious situation and our day to day lives will look very different when transmission takes hold. But I would rather trust in the experts and know they are working on the best evidence they have. It is incredibly complex. I've just caught up with the channel 4 news as mentioned up thread. WHO rep makes point we are all guinea pigs here. There is no perfect answer. I see I started off quite aggressive (genuine shock and worry at the distrust) but I absolutely maintain this is not a party political game and is evidence led.

Griefmonster · 13/03/2020 20:11

And back to OP - no I don't think they are calling out UK!

HavelockVetinari · 13/03/2020 20:14

Really? You're gobsmacked. This is what you get when you elect a proven liar. A man who's never done anything for the people - who was sacked twice for lying, who arranged to have people beaten up, who promised 350 mil a week for the NHS - who surrounds himself with incompetents and cheats and liars - this is our chickens coming home to roost

^ this

Griefmonster · 13/03/2020 20:16

And with that comment on chickens coming home to roost.... I am out. Take care everyone

MigginsMrs · 13/03/2020 20:16

I hope no one criticising the government’s strategy voted for them. That would be a bit of a cheek. We get what we vote for.

I didn’t vote for them but I think if the flattening then curve thing works it will have been a decent strategy. I think some people on here somehow think that there is an option which will stop cases going up and deaths occurring. There isn’t. Not because Boris is a cunt (which he is) but because it’s an illness.

tobee · 13/03/2020 20:38

I think Johnson is a cunt. But I don't think he's being cunty about this. It's totally different in tone to brexit. Which was totally cunty and said in frivolous way, that was "I'm lying, you know I'm lying but I'm going to do it anyway" . I may be completely wrong; it is a gut feeling. I hate our PM and so have no reason to defend him.

AutumnLeavesSeptember · 13/03/2020 20:40

When the WHO is trashing your approach you should listen. FFS! What's the point of worrying about a second peak if the first peak is so out of control.

AutumnLeavesSeptember · 13/03/2020 20:41

Honestly, modelling is NOT evidence.

SnoozyLou · 14/03/2020 00:31

Johnson has said that his hero was the Mayor from Jaws who kept the beaches open. This is not a good omen.

I'd like to think you're joking but I'm not quite sure.

MuthaFunka61 · 14/03/2020 00:40

I've heard on ch4 news that a new testing kit will soon be available which gives results in hours rather than days.
I'm hoping that this will help people to determine how they are going to manage themselves rather than rely on (in my opinion) questionable govt advise.

In the mean time I'm reducing my social contact and am grateful for modern communication.

@griefmonster

Why do people think "this Government" would willingly endanger their citizens and put massive pressure on society by maximising deaths?! I am gobsmacked at the lack of trust displayed. Genuinely very worrying. Does anyone read the official published guidance? or is this all based on reporting and half-baked rants from people with either out of date or zero experience. *

........

Honestly? I don't trust a thing this government does. Johnson has been proven to be a liar time and again.
*
The cynic in me would think that the government would see this natural disaster as having the potential to solve lot of problems facing this government, it could cull our ageing population. Take pressure off the NHS. It would mainly target the poor and disabled, all flies in the ointment for this Tory government.
*
I believe in the advice being put forward by the WHO and pretty much the rest of the developed countries in the world: isolate, test, quarantine and repeat.

Tory Britain cares about no one but the rich and elite in society, you only have to read past opinions from the likes of Cummings, Raab and Patel to see that.

I hope they change their minds soon or they will risk going down on the wrong side of history for the biggest disaster facing our country in a generation.*

SnoozyLou · 14/03/2020 10:18

@fedup21 It does feel a bit like that.
