Have people stopped going anywhere?

There seems to be a definite split in those taking the corona virus extremely seriously (with good reason for a minority) and those carrying on as normal.
We are supposed to be visiting friends next week, providing no one gets ill.
I wondered if people had noticed quieter motorway service stations/ roads etc?

We’re going to the cinema on Monday and probably again later in the week. Nothing’s changed for and won’t unless we get ill.

adaline · 13/03/2020 17:51

I went to Tesco this lunchtime and it was absolutely heaving. No loo roll, no pasta, no beans, no tinned veg, no hand sanitiser, no bottled water.

But aside from that, town was empty.

Egghead68 · 13/03/2020 17:52

Thanks @Orangeblossom78. Yes - I’m mainly working by videolink but in between times having great fun working out exercise regimes, reading, Netflix -eating chocolate- etc.!

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 13/03/2020 17:53

Drove through town earlier and there was a huge queue ehe to get into the supermarket. Roads also just as busy as usual and no parking!

LittleCandle · 13/03/2020 17:54

We were out yesterday and it was quiet, but it was also bitterly cold with a biting wind. In a coffee shop today and it was busy. Of the shops we went into, two of them weren't that busy and the third, Lidl, was heaving! The roads were certainly as busy as usual.

Inthepurplerain · 13/03/2020 17:57

No but there’s no cases here at the moment

Orangeblossom78 · 13/03/2020 18:08

Glad to hear Egghead. Just a thought if not getting out maybe some vitamin D might be a good plan. Unless you can get some sun

Evenquieterlife33 · 13/03/2020 18:27

Stopped going to gym. Husband working from home. Just booked online delivery for next week. Not going to a concert that is still on this weekend.

PickAChew · 13/03/2020 18:51

Still doing everyday stuff while it's possible. Town was quiet, this morning, with all the students going home early. They've been told to take all their belongings in case next term has to be cancelled.

Town Centre tesco metro was quite well stocked as it's nowhere near a car park and there were a few people in there clearly putting together packages for relatives. Annoyingly, I wanted to put a few things in for the food bank but they'd removed the collection box. Just when it's really needed. I had to lug my bag full of tins home and drop it in at a collection point in a local shop.
Slight amusement when someone let out a little cough, on the bus home, then several other people who had obviously been trying to suppress a tickle joined in. People are obviously feeling nervous.

Egghead68 · 14/03/2020 07:02

@Orangeblossom78 yes I have upped my vitamin D supplements (which we should all be taking over the winter anyhow imo). Stay safe everyone.

longhaulstress · 14/03/2020 07:07

I'm carrying on as normal for now. Went shopping last night and was definitely quieter and for a few drinks out last night but lots of bars still seemed busy.
A family member works for Lidl and said that 2 of his stores he looks after are on track to make more money this week than they did during Christmas week.

IceColdCat · 14/03/2020 07:14

We are expecting to cancel our week in France in the Easter holidays and are avoiding contact with elderly family members.

Otherwise carrying on as normal.

Growingboys · 14/03/2020 07:18

Still doing everyday stuff. Torn between not wanting to get it and thinking better to get it now.

But I did cancel taking my elderly dad to a hospital appt in case I unknowingly had it and passed it on to him.

Northernmum100 · 14/03/2020 07:20

Seemed quieter on the roads to and from work yesterday. Both DC have part time jobs in hospitality- one in 4* star hotel and they cancelled last nights shift/ tonight's shift and this is due to cancelled bookings in the hotel for both rooms and a planned event (big birthday bash I think). Other DC works corporate hospitality on events such as football and rugby matches and things like Aintreee races and I see that these are either being postponed or likely to be cancelled (daren't look at the news yet so might have happened by now...)

madeyemoodysmum · 14/03/2020 07:28

I'm normal but wouldn't go into London for a day or a museum etc.

I'm being very good with hand washing and using my gel when I get back in my car etc.

SpyApp · 14/03/2020 07:33

The cinema was virtually empty yesterday.

circleorsquare · 14/03/2020 07:37

I'm a teacher so no choice but to be out and about!

We've very few cases in my county so still going out for now but will reassess and keep an eye on the situation

Mrswhirley · 14/03/2020 07:45

As they are not routinely swabbing we don’t know how many cases there really are in any area. Only those being admitted to hospital appear to be being swabbed so we won’t really have any idea of actual numbers.
At least 70% of the population are estimated to get the virus, I believe the plan is just to delay the peak in order for the NHS to cope with the inevitable.

circleorsquare · 14/03/2020 07:49

Actually that is a good point about not knowing how many truly have it.

Bluewater1 · 14/03/2020 07:51

I have been doing usual things but am invited to the pub tonight to see a local band. They're my fave band but I'm seriously considering not going.

bemoreeverything · 14/03/2020 07:52

I'm about to cancel next weeks trip to London. I live hundreds of miles away though, so it's a huge trip. Also planning to cancel our Easter U.K. break. DH and I are bother higher risk and 2 of our D.C. are autistic and need us to be ok. I am however going out to Tesco later today. I will be as careful as I can.

All non essential outings are off, and I think by midweek I will be looking at delivery of shopping.

Mrswhirley · 14/03/2020 07:57

The majority of people will experience mild to moderate symptoms. It’s the frail ones that will be most at risk. Maybe we don’t need to ‘lockdown’ right now but practicing some element of social distancing would surely help those at risk.

Ellapaella · 14/03/2020 07:59

Still going to work and school but other than that I'm going to try and limit where we go.
Last weekend I was in London and not remotely concerned but this week feels different.
I didn't go on a night out that had been planned last night, a group of us were going to a party and we all decided not to go. I'm not going on a night out I had planned tonight either.
We will go to the beach today to walk the dog, I'll go for a run and maybe take the kids on a bike ride but we will be avoiding indoor spaces with lots of people.

Juanbablo · 14/03/2020 08:09

Planning to go into town today which is usually rammed at the weekend so I will be interested to see if it's very quiet. We are taking precautions such as regular hand washing, hand gel.

Lottiebugz22 · 14/03/2020 08:14

There's cases where I am unfortunately. I have been out every day and I've seen kids in masks and hardly anyone about. It has unsettled me so I think I'll stay in today.
