Furious at school

So a child at my sons secondary school has been confirmed to have coronavirus. They emailed us before school started today to tell us there would be an update late morning and not to ring the school but to wait for the update. The update comes telling us about the child and that they are now self isolating. They are closing school at 1pm for a deep clean and will re-open Monday as normal.

Why on earth have they allowed the students in today BEFORE the clean has taken place. They knew about this last night too as one of his teachers emailed me to say that my son wouldnt be able to hand in his GCSE coursework today as planned because his lesson wouldnt be going ahead. He didnt reply to my email asking why!

Well good luck teachers over 40. I’m serious

Thank you!

catherine

That's a total load of bollocks, you know.

Some of us don't want to catch it from our kids and had we shut down when we should have, we'd have ended up with thousands fewer cases. The NHS would have coped with a peak of not so many cases.
But of course, the british public would be bored and lonely at home, so let's all die instead.

Each to their own, everyone will
Do what they believe is best for their family.

SaigonSaigon · 13/03/2020 13:22

The Government (Cummings and Johnson) believe in survival of the fittest

They're not bothered. If they get it, they'll get the best medical care

Damn right. Do what you think is right here.

koshkatt · 13/03/2020 13:22

Really? Grin

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 13:23

You can’t get immunity from it China says you can catch it again as it’s flu like. I’m calling bull shit literally.

BeardedMum · 13/03/2020 13:25

Schools are just looking at attendance and acting irresponsibly in my view. They don’t even provide soap for the children in our schools.

ravenmum · 13/03/2020 13:25

The French have just shut all the schools. It's a difficult move to make; lots of parents who can't go in to work as a result, especially as they have been told that grandparents should be staying at home and cutting down social contact.

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 13:28

Well there is going to be some seriously ill teachers. Most people have an underlying contusion IMO over a certain age.

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 13:28

Condition!

Mrschainsawuk · 13/03/2020 13:29

You are more likely catching it from a shop then your children at school it's people like you who cause the panick

koshkatt · 13/03/2020 13:31

Schools are doing the right thing.

FreakStar · 13/03/2020 13:33

You shouldn't be able to catch this exact strain of the Corona Virus again, but virus's constantly mutate which is why we frequently catch colds and flu.

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 13:33

Wait 6 weeks tell me that then bye.

NellyGrace · 13/03/2020 13:33

Schools are doing the right thing.

In what way?

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 13:34

For Koshkatt

BeardedMum · 13/03/2020 13:38

Schools are following government advise but it’s not the right thing not to have soap available. It’s irresponsible. People who wants to should be able to keep their children at home. I would keep my youngest home if I wouldn’t be fined or put in prison or whatever attendance measure they have implemented.
I think this country is not doing enough when you look at other countries and what they are doing. I also feel the UK is not a country where people think of others much. There is little solidarity with more vulnerable which you see in other countries!

donquixotedelamancha · 13/03/2020 13:39

You can’t get immunity from it China says you can catch it again as it’s flu like.

You do get immunity to a particular strain of flu once you've had it. If you didn't then the last equally terrible strain (spanish flu) would still be killing people in the same numbers as in 1919.

Most people are going to catch this. The plan is to slow down transmission, so health care is effective and the death rate remains low.

No matter how reprehensible BJ might be, as a person, this is a perfectly sensible plan.

MrKlaw · 13/03/2020 13:40

people go to work + children go to school = large populations mixing = fast spread

People stay at home (social distancing) + children stay at home (more social distancing) = slow spread

If they're telling us to stay at home but sending our kids to school to mix and bring back germs, thats somewhat diluting the benefit of working from home in the first place.

koshkatt · 13/03/2020 13:41

Schools are taking their advice from the govt and not panicking and putting working parents in a very difficult situation and not jeapordising pupils' progress in school.

Soap is in all of our loos and hand sanitiser at every entrance to buildings. Reminder signs everywhere. Large gatherings cancelled.

If you want to keep your child off school then do so. The rest of us will carry on taking sensible precautions and not panicking.

PreseaCombatir · 13/03/2020 13:45

If you look at the other threads is increasing clear people are too stupid/self to self distance

BooseysMom · 13/03/2020 13:46

Thankfully no-one has the virus at the children's school but that policy seems so irresponsible ...

But how do we know who has it and who doesn't? With so many colds and coughs around generally and they don't swab everyone!

koshkatt · 13/03/2020 13:48

But how do we know who has it and who doesn't? With so many colds and coughs around generally and they don't swab everyone!

I think that this is true. I imagine that it is rife in the UK. And not very many people are getting seriously ill - so that should tell us something.

LastTrainEast · 13/03/2020 13:49

Medical experts will tell you NOT catching a virus is best, but that's not an option. Second best then is spreading out the exposure so we don't have the whole country ill at the same time and no one to treat them or deliver food.

If anyone wants to lock themselves down you can (you will not be taken to court for school attendance) , but you won't be safe to come out for many months (3 minimum?) and if you were planning to eat then you are relying on others to go into work and to send their kids to school so they can work.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 13/03/2020 13:51

But of course, the british public would be bored and lonely at home, so let's all die instead

Or, you know, healthcare workers who rely on schools and wraparound child care couldn't come to work, people with precarious jobs would be made redundant, more businesses would go under.
Recessions also cost lives, even if it's harder to measure directly, and have a hugely negative impact that will be felt for decades ahead by children and young people. I'm supportive of shutting schools, but also think that it's not as simple as some people on here suggest.
